You know, I honestly don't think anyone really cares, how well (or not) things are going in Iraq anymore.

I mean, unless something really bad happens....

But, we all kinda know what that's all about, what happened, what's going on now and why, so I mean... you know, a little plus or minus on the give-and-take probably isn't going to matter much, now, or anytime before the elections.

The only people who are gonna care about that, are the people with a political agenda, and I mean, yeah, we'll probably see all the glorious rah-rah crap hand-in-hand with the 9/11-bleeding-hearts crap, but I don't suppose either one of those will make much difference to the undecided voters in the middle, which is who both sides really need to court.

I mean, the only way anyone could steal the Dems' thunder on Iraq, is if the Prez put an end to that whole thing and brought everyone home before the election, and that's not gonna happen, so......

Of course political power is what the war is all about, always was. The idea was that the US could invade Iraq, be greeted as liberators in a nearly bloodless coup, and establish a democratic government there. The entire operation was to have lasted less than six months, according to one of the chief proponents of the invasion, Donald Rumsfeld. The Bush administration was to have been seen as visionary and heroes for having deposed a brutal dictator and brought freedom to cheering throngs, thus producing cheering throngs here at home as well. That was, as we all know now, a pipe dream that was shared by both Democrats and Republicans.

Now that the house of cards has come crashing down, the Democrats and even a lot of Republicans have sought to distance themselves from the war as much as possible.

The violence does seem to be ebbing, perhaps foreshadowing an eventual end to the debacle. Yes, indeed, that is good news for the Republicans who have found it more difficult to diminish their role in the train wreck that is Iraq than the Democrats have.

It is also good news for the US if it does, indeed mean that the violence in Iraq may end sometime before the currently predicted "decades and generations".
