Default Castro 'well enough for election'

Quote:
Castro 'well enough for election'

Raul Castro has been acting president since July 2006

The health of Cuban President Fidel Castro is good enough for him to be a candidate in next month's parliamentary elections, his brother Raul has said.
Raul Castro said Fidel was exercising two hours daily and putting on weight.

Fidel Castro handed over power temporarily to Raul in July 2006 when he underwent intestinal surgery.

Communist leaders back Fidel Castro's decision to run for parliament, a prerequisite to remaining president, his younger brother said.

Wow Parliamentary Elections in Communist Cuba!

The hard line commie?.. or the kinda hard line commie?

...

The insertion of Raul as acting leader back in 2006 was a wise move. It has given the Communist Party on that island time to enhance its controls over the nation in spite of Castro but before Castro's demise.
Hopefully Raul wil not have had enough time to ga such a firm control that after Fidel finally dies the people of Cuba can boot the Commies out.

Maybe Raul will give up power and actually hold democratic elections n Cuba ou never know but I doubt it. Raul's a pretty hard core Communist who looks rather eager to run aorund in his uniform after Fidel goes away for good.

They've had elections in Cuba for years.

Vote for one:

Fidel Castro. ____
Fidel Castro. ____
Fidel Castro. ____

I'd like to see him survive a US style presidential campaign, wouldn't you?

While it's high time for Castro to step down, I really wonder what is coming next in Cuba. They have never had a democracy there. Do the people really want one? Who is likely to be the next strong man, Raul? Raul is nearly as old as Fidel, so how long is he going to be able to reign? Come to think of it, he's about the same age as McCain, but that's another story.

What's likely to happen is a takeover by the resort and casino corporations. Whether or not that is a good thing depends on your perspective.
