Default Super Tuesday Won't Decide Nominations -zzz

Quote:
WASHINGTON — Don't look to crown any presidential nominees on Super Tuesday.

The race for delegates is so close in both parties that it is mathematically impossible for any candidate to lock up the nomination on Feb. 5, according to an Associated Press analysis of the states in play that day.

"A lot of people were predicting that this presidential election on both sides was going to be this massive sprint that ended on Feb. 5," said Jenny Backus, a Democratic consultant who is not affiliated with any candidate. Now it's looking as if the primaries after Super Tuesday _ including such big, delegate-rich states as Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania _ could grow in importance.

"Maybe some states were better off waiting," said Backus.

That doesn't mean Super Tuesday won't be super after all. Voters in more than 20 states will go to the polls on the biggest day of the primary campaign, and thousands of delegates will be at stake.

But it's possible Feb. 5 might not even produce clear front-runners.

Here's why:

Heres hoping its pretty much obviously decided on Feb 5th and simply sealed up in early March instead of having a bunch of hanger ons until summer.

I'd like to look at a list of states showing which ones have closed primaries, which are winner take all, and how many delegates each has.

Florida is a closed primary. The Reps took half their delegates away and the Dems took all of them away. If it was an open primary, you can imagine how many democrats and independents would be choosing the Rep nominee. Florida is important for momentum and that's about it. Since Giuliani chose to make his stand there, it's a make or break state for him.

Texas is open, but truly a red state. I can't even make a guess how it will turn out. The question for me is who will be left by that time? Will Romney and McCain be all that's left by then?

I think Romney, McCain and Giuliani will all be alive then.

I think Rudy's time to shine might be after Tsunami Tuesday (considering he survives that).

If Rudy takes third in Florida he may be toast - which would be my prediction. Huckabee is out of money and now giving up in Florida. I am thinking it is going to come down to a Romney/McCain battle.
