Thread: Convention Speakers

  1. Default Convention Speakers

    At long last:

Boston, MA – Mitt Romney today announced Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan as his Vice Presidential running mate. Below is Congressman Ryan’s biography:

Isn’t it odd that on the day Romney announced his VP the lineup for the Republican National Convention is announced?:

The speakers, so far, include a few familiar faces in Republican circles, such as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and GOP primary candidate Rick Santorum. Additionally, the list boasts a number of governors, including Susana Martinez (New Mexico), John Kasich (Ohio), Rick Scott (Fla.), Mary Fallin (Okla.), and Nikki Haley (South Carolina).

    XXXXX

At least three Hispanic speakers have been chosen, including Martinez, congressional candidate Ted Cruz (Tex.), and Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuño.
First let me say that the interminable campaign has been a snoozer from day one; so the Convention lineup is at least as exciting as Romney now that Ryan is #2.

    The speakers

I was sure Ban Ki-moon would be included, but my source (my wife) tells me the Democrat Convention has first dibs on roll-on deodorant. Goofy Annan was mentioned as a substitute for Ban, but Republican gray beards squelched that idea real fast because of his recent failure in Syria. A wise decision. It’s never a good idea to associate failure with a political party’s nominating convention.

Announcing the lineup and the VP on the same day seems like poor media management. The VP is good for at least four days of coverage. The Convention lineup on its own would be good for a day. Throwing away a day of coverage by overlapping the two is wasteful if not downright sinful.

I don’t want to be too hard on Romney so I’ll close by admitting he showed some smarts in picking a running mate who won’t antagonize conservatives, or please the Democrats as would Rubio or Jindal. Those guys are good, but there is still that eligibility question.

First group of convention speakers announced

As the Republican National Convention nears, names of speakers and platform committee members are being announced.

Newt Gingrich has been tapped to teach a series of workshops nicknamed Newt University, the New York Times reported.

Some are speculating that the choice of speakers is intended to attract a more diverse voting pool. At least three Hispanic speakers have been chosen, including Martinez, congressional candidate Ted Cruz (Tex.), and Puerto Rico Gov. Luis Fortuño. The Washington Post’s Sean Sullivan argued that the choices also signify a Republican effort to reach out to women. “[Fallin’s] selection further underscores Republicans’ desire to make inroads with women, especially at a time when Democrats are charging Republicans with waging a ‘war on women.’”

The Republican platform committee is headed by Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and co-chaired by Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota and Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee. Possible discussion points for the platform include a Federal Reserve Audit; Romney spoke favorably about the idea on August 3.

Also, the Log Cabin Republicans, who represent gay and lesbian GOP members, have said they are aiding the platform committee with editing their stance on traditional marriage to make the language “more inclusive.”

It look like Rice Cakes’ road game ain’t working with everybody:

Condoleezza Rice spoke to the RNC Wednesday night to near universal acclaim. I agree that it was a smoothly delivered speech, no doubt because it's the same speech she always gives and practice makes perfect.

    XXXXX

Post-Reagan Era Republicans in any event, have had enough of Beltway careerists, who will say anything to win the next big job, or in Condi's case, the same thing, over and over.
No matter. Rice will pack her balloons and head back to her rat hole in the academy.

I do have doubts about Romney’s judgement:

I don't know if Rice seriously competed to be Romney's VP. If she did and was outshone by Paul Ryan's obvious depth and brilliance, it reflects well on Romney's good judgment.
Why in hell did he let a former secretary of state with a questionable track record speak and NOT give a former VP candidate conservatives admire and respect the same platform? If he is so afraid of what Sarah might say perhaps Tea Partiers are listening to the wrong Republicans?

I have to say that Romney is proving to be the most frustrating Republican candidate I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen wimps and boobs, but none so frustrating as Romney. Everything he says and does might be smart politics, but he only looks half-assed when he mixes good words and deeds with political wiggle room. Methinks the man is putting too much stock in “Anybody But Obama.”

Condi Rice Apeaks Again. And Again

Condoleezza Rice spoke to the RNC Wednesday night to near universal acclaim. I agree that it was a smoothly delivered speech, no doubt because it's the same speech she always gives and practice makes perfect.

Compare her speech to the GOP convention in 2000 to the one she gave in 2012; all very similar. In 2000, George Bush knows we must be strong and engage the world. In 2012 Mitt Romney does too. Free trade is good and important for international relations. In the latest iteration she also remarks on school choice. She ends both talks with a recollection of segregation days in Alabama.

No thought of any specific policy ideas are ever advanced. We are warned about China in both speeches, but not told what, if anything, we are supposed to do. From the 2012 speech you would never know George Bush had ever been President or Rice his National Security Advisor and Secretary of State.

Perhaps in a more extended format Rice might be more substantive? Don't count on it; her 2011 autobiography runs an amazing 784 pages yet you learn next to nothing of her personal life beyond adolescence, or her foreign policy philosophy. There's no analysis or reflection on the many historic events of the Bush years or her role in them. She barely even tells her readers where she was all that time, but merely regurgitates the international headlines of the day.

I don't know if Rice seriously competed to be Romney's VP. If she did and was outshone by Paul Ryan's obvious depth and brilliance, it reflects well on Romney's good judgment. Post-Reagan Era Republicans in any event, have had enough of Beltway careerists, who will say anything to win the next big job, or in Condi's case, the same thing, over and over.

Good one CW. You know, sometimes flanders can be spot on with his criticism of liberals or liberalism in general, but then he makes an arse of himself when he decides to bash the Republicans. In summary, I would have to say that Flanders is a RINO or heaven forbid a GOD awful fence sitting moderate who just can't seem to make his mind up and take a bold stance with his beliefs. He seems like a nice guy, but he would do himself a great favor if he were to shed the RINO skirt once and for all by stating his true ideological makeup in front of the PF world for all to see. I'm actually pulling for the guy to come out of the closet once and for all.

Yeah, I did just that, I revisited history and to no surprise my response #22 to you in that one confirms my suspicion that you are indeed a liberal wearing a RINO mask, but closer to reality is that you did indeed vote for obama the first time around.
