Icon9 Democrat's Presidential Failures over the last 60 years

Only twice in the last 60 years have the Democrat party managed to win a presidential election with more than 50% of the popular vote.

1948 - Harry S. Truman_________________49.8%
1952 - Dwight David Eisenhower__________54.9%
1956 - Dwight David Eisenhower__________57.6%
1960 - John Fitzgerald Kennedy___________49.7%
1964 - Lyndon Baines Johnson____________60.6%
1968 - Richard Milhous Nixon_____________43.4%
1972 - Richard Milhous Nixon_____________60.3%
1976 - James Earl Carter_________________50.1%
1980 - Ronald Wilson Reagan_____________50.8%
1984 - Ronald Wilson Reagan_____________58.8%
1988 - George Herbert Walker Bush________53.4%
1992 - William Jefferson Clinton___________43.0%
1996 - William Jefferson Clinton___________49.2%
2000 - George Walker Bush_______________47.9%*
2004 - George Walker Bush_______________50.7%

As you can see, democrats have won 6 of the last 15 elections, and only 2 were with a majority of the popular vote. Republicans have won 9 of the last 15, 7 of which they had more than 50% of the popular vote.

This is an interesting statistic in that if Obama were to somehow win the popular vote it will be something a democrat hasn't done in 32 years and something the democrats have only managed to do twice in the last 60 years.

*Even though Al Gore had won the popular vote over George Bush in 2000, as we all know he didn't win in the electoral college. Regardless, Gore still did not attain more that 50% of the popular vote as his final percentage was 48.4%.

I thought that the democrat was gonna have a walk especially against a neo-con republican who doesn't have support of the base. But with both Clinton and Obama finally coming under scrutiny by the MSM, it may turn out they are not so popular come November:

RCP Average 03/05 to 03/15 - Obama - 45.6% McCain - 46.0% McCain +0.4%

Comparing the RCP Average to Today's CNN poll and you find nothing has changed in the last 5 months. They are both around 45%.

Obama will have to do what no Democrat nominee has been able to do in the last 28 years (get more than 50% of the popular vote), which is unlikely. The polls invariably give 3-5% more than the democrat ever gets in the general election, and gives the republican candidate 3-5% less than what he actually gets in the general election.

That's a sad commentary on the American public. Frankly, I have found that the democratic party hasn't put up very compelling people to vote for until this election.
