Most polls are BS. If you want a polling service that has a history of being accurate, check these guys out:
Rasmussen Reports Here is a comparison of the polling results versus the actual results for the 2006 Senate races. They also accurately predicted, within one percent point, the last two general election results. I don't think you'll find a better polling group than this. With that said, no polling group (because of small sample size) will have impressive accuracy all the time. But Rasmussen Reports has the best record historically.

Statistician's Blues
They say 3 percent of the people use 5 to 6 percent of their brain 97 percent use 3 percent and the rest goes down the drain now I don't know which one I am, but I'll bet you my last dime 99 percent think we're 3 percent 100 percent of the time They say 64 percent of the world's statistics are made up right there on the spot 82.4 percent of the people believe them whether they are accurate statistics or not Now I don't know what you believe but I do know there's no doubt I need another shot of something 90 proof I got too much to think about (C)too much to (G)think about (C)too much to (G)figure out stuck between hope and doubt its too much to think about 97 percent of everything you learned in school was just bull(*)(*)(*)(*) you'll never need 81 percent of everything you got you bought to satisfy your greed because 86 percent of the world's population links possessions to success even though 80 percent of the wealthiest one percent of the population drinks to an alarming excess more money more stress 84 percent of all statisticians truly hate their jobs they say that the average bank robber lives within 20 miles of the bank that he robs there's a little bank not far from here I've been watching now for a while lately all I can think about is how bad I want to go out in style |

People are sheep who like to flock. In public, they tend to go with the "comfortable" opinion, or lean how they think other people should perceive them. In private however, their consciences take over.
This explains why John "Lurch" Kerry lost his election. Everyone was all "rah rah rah" out in the open, but inside, it was "There's no way in hell I'm voting for this schmuck!"

I think polsters can only be honered as a means of "science" when they show the under/over.
