Quote:
John McCain rarely speaks about his experiences as a POW in Vietnam, but one of his cell mates at the Hanoi Hilton on Thursday described some of the conditions and character traits that earned McCain the commendations he received for his war service.

Col. George “Bud” Day, 83, is the most decorated service man since Gen. Douglas MacArthur, with more than 70 medals. A living legend, Day was blown out of the sky two months to the day before the North Vietnamese shot down a propaganda prize, whose father and grandfather were renowned American admirals.

“They told me we were gonna get a roommate and it was gonna be the prince. The Vietnamese called him the prince so I asked my nurse what was his name? They said John McCain,” Day told FOX News.

Both he and McCain were taken captive in 1967, and held until their release in 1973.

Quote:
Colonel George E. “Bud” Day is the most decorated service man since General Douglas MacArthur.

Day has been awarded the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Hearts, in fact, more than 70 medals and awards. He calls John McCain a hero, and thinks voters deserve to know more about his Hanoi Hilton cell mate.

....

McCain, a man whose father and grandfather were renowned Admirals, was a prized propaganda prisoner for the enemy. The Colonel says their captors called McCain “the Prince.”
McCain was more than half dead when Day first laid eyes on his fellow POW.

“I took one look at him and my brain instantly said they dropped this guy off on me to claim that we let him die. He was just emaciated, very, very skinny, in this awful body cast.”

The colonel and John McCain were cell-mates in that tiny cell for two of their more than 5 yrs of torture in captivity. Day’s broken arm was re-broken during torture and healed in such a way he would not be able to fly again. McCain, broken and injured himself, helped his fellow cell-mates rehabilitate their ravaged bodies.

“so I got some strips of bamboo, smuggled em into the room, John put his foot in my arm pit and pulled on my wrist until we could get the bone forced back down.”

McCain himself today continues to suffer the injuries of torture. He still cannot raise his arms above his shoulders. But he does not like to talk about his time as a prisoner of war.

“he just doesn’t trade on that. I think he feels that it’s wrong to trade on being a hero, but he is.”

Maybe Obama can pull out that nasty hang nail episode he had during his Marxism and Us classes at Columbia.

Seriously, I want greco and whoever else keeps trying to downplay McCain's service to just keep doing it. Here is McCain who hardly talks about his POW days, and they were all impressed when Kerry showed up at the convention and saluted. Maybe we'll get lucky and Michael Moore will make a documentary about it.

I didn't know until tonight while watching Bud's interview that McCain cannot raise his arms due to permanent damage from the torture he experienced.

If it had been John Kerry, we would have heard about it daily......

If it would have been Kerry, he would have pinned medals on his back, and all over the front, with sign explaining each one.

I like McCain a lot more than kerry, but the way you right-wing nuts go on about him like he is the devil is insane!! He was an unspectacular and boring candidate, but the way you people try to portray him as some sinister demon who is the embodiment of all that is bad is absolutely ridiculous. If you were to step back a moment, and get off your ideological high-horse you would be embarrassed at how silly you all sound!

actually, kerry was the one who tossed the service medals away during the VietNam Veterans Against the War protest ... seems the opposite act of collecting them

He kept his, bubba. The ones he threw over the fence belonged to other vets.

notice those ribbons above the heart of Col. Day in the above photograph. those ribbons represent a medal conferred to the wearer. kerry took his off of his uniform and tossed them over the fence erected in front of the capitol steps in '71 ... or are you telling us he was wearing another soldier's uniform?

You know the difference between medals and ribbons? Kerry threw his own ribbons over the fence and the medals of two other vets - not his own medals.
