Default fines for not voting

Two separate questions for this one.

1) Do you think there should be a fine for not voting?

2) If there was a widespread propaganda campaign that announced that there would be a fine for not voting and it was played on all the major news networks but there was no actual fine do you think that a lot of people in America would still believe it and vote because of it?

I think yes for both. Or instead of a fine "Neither" should be a permanent option on the presidential ballot.

No, there should not be a fine for not voting, no one should vote unless they actually want to.

Yes to the next one, Americans will believe anything!

No it goes against the right to liberty. We shouldn't have to do anything we don't want to.

Want if I want to imprison you? Ole catch 22 eh?

Paragon, people who don't care being forced to vote isn't much better than people who don't care not voting. If you're going for electoral reform go with prefferential voting imo.

I probably didn't explain it well enough.
Voting is not compulsary in Australia, however, what IS compulsary is registering to vote. We also have to go and get our names crossed off the register on voting day. After we have done that, we can eithor stay and vote, or simply leave without voting.

Counter-questions:
a) Do you think the words "freedom" or "liberty" apply to such a draconian concept?
b) Does your little fine apply to the mentally retarded? The invalid? Those who are out of the country on election day?

Komrade, did you know that in Mother Russia, politicians used free vodka to get voters to come out to the polls? Do you see a correlation here?

Ah yes..."freedom," forced upon us at gunpoint. You're a democrat, aren't you?

I think that it is every citizen's right to vote or not to vote. Take away either right and we are no longer free.

Widespread propaganda campaigns are business as usual at the news outlets (left and right, both are corporate).

None of the above should be a legitimate vote. If the majority has any say what so ever, this should be a recognized and practiced option!

Absolutely not! Only an authoritarian would force people to vote.
