From his RNC speech (which was outstanding ):

Quote:
--------
So terrorists learned they could intimidate the world community and too often the response, particularly in Europe, was “accommodation, appeasement and compromise.”

And worse, the terrorists also learned that their cause would be taken more seriously, almost in direct proportion to the barbarity of the attack.

Terrorist acts became a ticket to the international bargaining table.
How else to explain Yasser Arafat winning the Nobel Peace Prize when he was supporting a terrorist plague in the Middle East that undermined any chance of peace?
--------

Winston Churchill saw the dangers of Hitler while his opponents characterized him as a war-mongering gadfly. Ronald Reagan saw and described the Soviet Union as “the evil empire” while world opinion accepted it as inevitable and belittled Ronald Reagan’s intelligence. President Bush sees world terrorism for the evil that it is.

John Kerry has no such clear, precise and consistent vision. This is not a personal criticism of John Kerry. I respect him for his service to our nation.

But it is important to see the contrast in approach between the two men: President Bush, a leader who is willing to stick with difficult decisions even as public opinion shifts, and John Kerry, whose record in elected office suggests a man who changes his position often even on important issues.

When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1990, John Kerry voted against the Persian Gulf war. Later, he said he actually supported the war.

Then in 2002, as he was calculating his run for President, he voted for the war in Iraq. And then just nine months later, he voted against an $87 billion supplemental budget to fund the war and support our troops.

He even, at one point, declared himself an antiwar candidate. Now, he says he’s pro-war. At this rate, with 64 days left, he still has time to change his position at least three or four more times.
---------------

Nice speech.

Default Was it a good speech?

I am still not sure what he said though.

There used to be Hitler, then Soviet Union, Europeans are chickens, we had 9/11, Bush spoke to a construction worker and they both cursed terrorists, Kerry is a flip-flopper, he voted for 87 billion before voting against it.

Did I miss anything?

Oh, Neither he nor McCain mentioned Bin Laden.

Both he and McCain were great. A democrat called in to CSPAN and said that they implied that only Republicans cared. Pretty sad that they have to comment when they didn't even watch, don't you think? They both talked about how united the country was after 9/11.

I agree, it was a great speech as well as John McCain's...two very well respected men who are respected from both sides support Bush and believe he HAS to be our President to win the war on terror...end of story.

Why would he have to mention Bin Laden? Did you need a diagram or did you need him to articulate for you? This isn't a war on OBL...it's a war on all terrror and terrorists supporters....good lord you have to be joking

Seeing what you want must be nice...because it stops you from seeing the whole picture....stop just hearing what you want and listen to it all...that was not a good summary of his speech and you know it....ignorance is bliss eh? You prove that wonderfully.

Default ...

I liked both speeches, I think they did a good job with them. It really brought out some good points. I look forward to seeing the rest of the RNC, will be very interesting IMO.

Default .

Anyone who has read my previous posts knows how much I respect John McCain. If I could put anyone on the ballot (other than a wasted write-in), it would be McCain. He always seems to be an intelligent, gracious, and honorable man.

That said, I had trouble watching him praise Bush tonight. Bush was terrible to him in 2000 and not only do I believe McCain shouldn't forgive Bush's disgusting tactics, but I don't believe he has. It seems clear that his speech tonight was his kickoff speech for 2008 and if America is lucky, we will get him elected. He is a far better man than either (and in fact both) Bush and Kerry.

As for Rudy, he meandered too much. Because NY is his town, the Repubs gave him the prime spot and instead of making the kind of speech he has in the past (erudite and focused), he seemed to jump from topic to topic never bothering to post directions to where he was going. The vast majority of his speech listed events that are so well known that bringing them up again made the speech boring. Rudy is a very intelligent guy and I have seen him make some great speeches (mostly before he became a celebrity after 9.11), but the one tonight was boring and uninformative.

McCain's Speech gets an 8 out of 10.

Rudy's Speech gets a (generous) 5 out of 10.

Default good speeches

I think the speeches by Guiliani and McCain are good enough to swing some independents the Republican way. I didn't watch the speeches live but the news showed them speaking really well and with great content.

Default McCain's reference to Moore

I like McCain a lot and hope he does run in 2008.

However, I was a little dissapointed in his speech last night. I thought it didn't flow too well. Although that did give it a more honest feel. He did have some good points why he supports Bush.

I thought the most interesting part of his speech was his indirect reference to Moore:

a disingenuous film maker...

And the response from the crowd. Haven't seen Repub's get this worked up before... Perhaps it was the fact they knew Moore was in there watching as a reporter.
