Woof, I know you're not stupid. I've already establihsed that Der Spiegel is NOT "in the tank" for Obama. So you can actually stop saying that. It is not true. And if you wish to base your further arguments on a lie, then you can just go ahead and discuss this with yourself henceforth.

Now, in the other thread on this subject, you can see how the "retraction" doesn't say WHAT is being retracted, it was issued -- not by al-Maliki -- but by an Iraqi spokesperson through CentCom, that the original version of the story was allowed to be printed by the government-controlled Iraqi newspapers, and that even in the half-hearted retraction -- apparently done to satisy Bush, and for no other reason -- they still say the word "timetable."

al-Maliki said it. Der Spiegel has a detailed transcript of the conversation.

End if story.

Not true. The spokesman is Ali al-Dabbagh, al-Maliki's CHIEF SPOKESMAN. He's the one who said it; not CentCom.

Save your breath. The truth does not matter to juveniles.

I certainly have. You just choose to ignore the facts -- of which I have posted several. With links.

Sigh...

Besides Maliki's peculiar decision to make his remarks about Obama in Der Spiegel instead of another publication, there are other reasons to question what, exactly, Maliki was trying to do. Why, if Maliki was trying to make a splash with his comments, did he offer a semi-retraction? And through Centcom? Did he regret his foray into U.S. politics? Did he genuinely believe his marks were mistranslated, and if so, why didn't he make a more specific retraction?

Another interesting detail, noted by the Times. al-Dabbagh's statement was released by CentCom. I do not know how often Iraqi government statements are released by CentCom.
Sorry. You guys are just going to have to deal with the FACT that he said it.

The left is now calling Maliki a liar. How smart is that in the long run?

Not true. A spokesperson, through Centcom, released a half-assed retraction without saying what he retracted.

You know, you cats can say the same thing over and over and over again, but it won't make it any more true than it was this morning.

Al-Maliki said it. There's a detailed transcript on the Der Spiegel web site. You guys are just going to have to live with it.

Now... which part of this, SPECIFICALLY, did Der Spiegel get wrong?

Quote:
Spiegel: When will the majority of U.S. troops finally leave Iraq?

Maliki: As far as we're concerned, as soon as possible. U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks of 16 months. That, we think, would be the correct period of time for the withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.

Spiegel: Is that an endorsement for the U.S. presidential election in November? Does Obama, a civilian, understand Iraq better than his rival John McCain, a war hero, at the end of the day?

Maliki: Whoever bargains on short-term time limits is closer to the reality. Artificially extending the time that U.S. troops stay would cause problems. That being said, of course I don't want to give any endorsement. Electing a president is something Americans themselves have to do. The job of Iraqis is to say what we want. And here the people and the government are in agreement. Coalition troops should be in Iraq for a limited time.
Did they make up the whole thing? Or was it like this (with the edits that you must think Der Spiegel made to substantiate your nonsense)?
Quote:

Maliki: As far as we're concerned, (not) as soon as possible. U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks of 16 months. That, we think, would (not) be the correct period of time for the withdrawal, (even with) with the possibility of slight changes.

Spiegel: Is that an endorsement for the U.S. presidential election in November? Does Obama, a civilian, understand Iraq better than his rival John McCain, a war hero, at the end of the day?

Maliki: (What? Are you STUPID? Did you hear what I SAID, for Allah's sake? I said Obama is WRONG! WRONG, (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)! It's almost like you expect me to say that) Whoever bargains on short-term time limits is closer to the reality. Artificially extending the time that U.S. troops stay would (not) cause problems. That being said, of course I don't want to give any endorsement. Electing a president is something Americans themselves have to do. The job of Iraqis is (not to) to say what we want. And here the people and the government are in agreement. Coalition troops should be in Iraq for (as long as Bush and McCain say they should be, and not for) a limited time.
So, the next time you say al-Maliki was "misquoted," you need to say HOW and WHERE he was misquoted, and what he actually said.
