Default Did reps think they were gonna get away with smear campaign

"When John Kerry was dodging bullets in Vietnam, George Bush and Dick Cheney were dodging the draft in the United States," Cecil Roberts, president of the United Mine Workers of America, declared Monday at a Labor Day picnic here.

In Akron, Ohio, Mayor Donald Plusquellic described Bush as "hiding in the woods in Alabama" while Kerry "was defending our country."

And in Steubenville, Ohio, Rep. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio) introduced Kerry as "a man who was carrying guns through the jungles of Vietnam while George Bush was neglecting his military service and carrying out his responsibilities as a cheerleader at Yale University."

Many of the group's assertions about Kerry have since been discredited, but a new group, Texans for Truth, has sprung up to question Bush's participation in his National Guard unit while in Alabama during the war.

In a television advertisement to begin airing Friday, Bob Mintz, a lieutenant colonel in the Alabama Air National Guard during the time Bush was supposed to have been there in 1972, will say he never saw Bush at the base even though he looked for him, according to a spokeswoman for the group.

Akron's Plusquellic, for example, said in an interview that no one from the campaign told him what to say and he did not read from prepared remarks. Though he said his primary concern is the nation's loss of jobs, Plusquellic, the president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, called Bush "a draft dodger."

"It's clear John Kerry was over there serving," said Plusquellic, who described himself as infuriated that Vietnam is an issue in the campaign. "And George Bush did everything he could in his father's power to get out of going over there.

Default .

Ken.. i have tried to reason with you many times and i am going to try one last time my friend...

Simply put..

Bush is not running on his stint in the TANG... Kerry was TRYING to run on his stint in the 'Nam... d'ya notice that he isn't really trying to run with that now? If the Swiftees were total liars Kerry would still be trying to run as a war hero.....

If President Bush were basing his qualifications on his service in the Guard then i would welcome those Texans for Truth.. But he isn't...

HOWEVER, unlike John Kerry.. i am not going to try to shut up these Texans for Truth and that is the difference between Democrats and Republicans...

You got any info on President Clinton and the honorable time he served in the military?

Just curious,

Bush is running on his character, on his leadership qualities, his honesty, on being a courageous and decisive leader. His Alabama service certainly reflects on his character so it's a fair deal.

Besides do you really think that if Kerry did not mention Vietnam Bush and Swifties would not try to smear his service anyway. It that's what you think - ask John McCain, he did not run on his Vietnam record 4 years ago and still was smeared.

Besides even if Kerry did decide to run on his Vietnam record - it's not an invitation to smear and lie about his service. Critisizing his anti-war testimonies and activities is a fair deal, claiming that he did not deserve his medals without a shred of evidence is not.

McCain wasn't smeared on his Vietnam record. So your comparison is widely inaccurate. Kerry and his democrat cronies opened this can of worms, now they are unhappy because it's affecting them negatively. I bet they're regretting attacking Bush's guard record now. The public didn't give two craps about it, but Kerry is getting hurt.

Bush Campaign Used Code Words to Question McCain's Temper. "A smear campaign of the ugliest sort is now coursing through the contest for the presidency in 2000. Using the code word "temper," a group of Senate Republicans, and at least some outriders of the George W. Bush campaign, are spreading the word that John McCain is unstable. The subtext, also suggested in this whispering campaign, is that he returned from 5 1/2 years as a POW in North Vietnam with a loose screw. And it is bruited about that he shouldn't be entrusted with nuclear weapons." (Drew op-ed, Washington Post, 11/19/99)

Bush Supporters Questioned McCain's Sanity. "Some of George W. Bush's supporters have questioned Republican presidential candidate John McCain's fitness for the White House, suggesting that his five years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam drove him insane at the time." (Lansing State Journal, 11/23/99)

Rove Suggests Former POW McCain Committed Treason and Fathered Child With Black Prostitute. In 2000, McCain operatives in SC accused Rove of spreading rumors against McCain, such as "suggestions that McCain had committed treason while a prisoner of war, and had fathered a child by a black prostitute," according to the New Yorker. (New Yorker, 5/12/03)

Default Why isn't Bush using his service to run on?

BECAUSE BUSH CAN'T -- THAT'S WHY. BUSH HAS A DISHONORABLE RECORD THAT HAS BEEN HIDDEN BY THE LOSS/DESTRUCTION OF DOCUMENTS.

Records missing and presumed destroyed include the evaluation that was supposed to be written after Bush missed his flight physical and lost certification -- National Guard scratches its head and says we just can't find that record.

Bush did enlist but whether or not Bush served honorably apparently only Bush knows. He won't explain and leaves things ambiguous. All the while Bush's allies attack Kerry's record from 30 years ago, a record of herorism, valor and decoration, something which Kerry definitely should run on.

Can you imagine the negativity if Kerry HAD NOT run on his record -- the smear-meisters in here and fronting for the Bush campaign would be claiming it must be because Kerry has something to hide or is ashamed of his war record.

Kerry has a documented record of herorism -- with Bush all we get are holes in time and missing documents. Of course Bush's own personal service is vital, or should be for one running as a WAR President (although the way Bush keeps flip-flopping, one day he's a war president, the next a peace president, one day the war on terrorism is unwinnable, the next day it's winnable, it's understandable if America is confused -- George surely is).

Default So in other words

The best you can come up with is putting words in Bush's mouth? His temper has nothing to do with Vietnam. Those are your words...and those of the liberal media which you linked. The New Yorker? I didn't realize links like Newsmax were considered reliable. Guess I can start using them now that I see the New Yorker in there. The prostitute also had nothing to do with Vietnam. Please provide links showing the words out of Bush's mouth or someone on his campaign, not analysis by the New Yorker.
