The problem isn't "softness". It's a complete lack of priority in what information is important... of course that's because their audiences have dumb priorities in what's important.
When it comes to gaffes, soundbites, and alleged scandals, the media tend to be pretty hard. They're only soft when it comes to issues and policies... and it's nothing new.
