1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. "Barack Obama will not be coming to us," a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. "I don't know why." Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

He made time for Opium Kingpins, but not time for our injured troops in Germany.

The Pentagon informed Obama that they would not support his trip, and he didn't want to turn an actual visit into a political stunt. Check your facts before you make up lies.

BERLIN (AP) - He was supposed to visit wounded members of the U.S. armed forces during his visit to Germany. But Barack Obama scrapped those plans -- and he's being criticized for it.

His spokesman says Obama decided it would be inappropriate to visit the wounded troops while on a visit funded by his campaign. He says Obama made the decision out of respect for the servicemen and women.

But John McCain's campaign says it was the wrong decision. A McCain spokesman says, "It is never inappropriate to visit our men and women in the military."

The visit with the troops, which had been scheduled for tomorrow, hadn't ever appeared on the schedule of events distributed to reporters traveling with Obama. The first word of it came in the statement that it was canceled.

Obama's decision raised a number of questions because the visit, which had been scheduled for Friday, never appeared on the schedule of events distributed to reporters who are accompanying him on his travels.

The first word from the campaign about its existence was a statement from Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.

Obama had been planning to go to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany before a flight to Paris. Gibbs said the stop was canceled because Obama decided "it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign."

I think Obama made the right decision. And I think it shows he respects our troops abroad. While McCain will callously use them at every opportunity in his campaign, while refusing to support legislation that would help them. Shame on McCain.
