Icon9 McCain to the troops, Hey I got mine

While I don't begrudge McCain his $58,000 dollar a year "disability" pension from the navy, I do agree that it looks quite bad that he opposed the recent GI bill, stating that it's benefits were "too generous". Especially since he receives a salary of $165,000 as a senator and his wife is reportedly worth over a hundred million dollars.

Quote:
McCain’s disability pension may renew questions about his fitness
The disclosure of the Navy benefit for injuries incurred as a Vietnam POW may raise fitness questions.

By Ralph Vartabedian
April 22, 2008 in print edition A-12

Sen. John McCain has long said he is in robust health and is strong enough to hike the Grand Canyon, but he also is receiving what his staff Monday termed a “disability pension” from the Navy.

When McCain released his tax return for 2007 on Friday, he separately disclosed that he received a pension of $58,358 that was not listed as income on his return.

On Monday, McCain’s staff identified the retirement benefit as a “disability pension” and said that McCain “was retired as disabled because of his limited body movements due to injuries as a POW.”

I'm sure that all the right wing fiscal conservatives that just LOVE our troops but HATE wasteful government spending when it's aimed at helping poor people will agree that his vote on the GI bill was shameful.

Quote:
First off, I find it fascinating that John McCain, who is refusing to vote for the GI Bill for our troops because "it's too generous," is himself getting $58,000 a year, tax-free, from the US government for his military service. Had McCain been getting that amount every year since Vietnam, that would total $2,000,000 for the man who isn't into overgenerous government. I just find that interesting.

His staff responded with the classic "he was tortured for his country." Yeah, we get it. The torture card. It's to McCain what 9/11 was to Giuliani's candidacy - the never-ending name-drop. Though what McCain's staff actually said was downright, um, we're being nice to Clinton now, so I won't say Clintonian. Here's the quote:
McCain campaign strategist Mark Salter said Monday night that McCain was technically disabled. "Tortured for his country -- that is how he acquired his disability," Salter said.
Technically? What does that mean? Usually, it means that under the strict reading of the law, you're covered, but in fact it's kind of a nudge-nudge-wink-wink situation - that's what "technically" means. It's called parsing, which is something you do to "technically" claim something is true, when on its face it really isn't. So is McCain "technically" disabled, and taking $58,000 a year tax free from the government, or is he actually disabled? I would imagine there are other solders who are actually disabled who could use the money. And if he is actually disabled, just how disabled is he?

Lets not become hostile if you want to discuss the issue be a little bit more open to debate. In any case what Im saying is that the parties in charge love to play politics with important issues and add pork into popular bills so that they can pass on time for their reelection and help their Lobbysit buddies at the same time. They use pressure tactics in the media to force bills down objections throats with out due debate which is vital to have a effiecent and effective goverment. Its Mob Rule and its not the people whos interests are being looked after.

I never become hostile. Polite debate of the issues is always welcome. I merely asked which specific parts of the GI bill YOU found objectionable.

BTW, here's a video clip of John McCain, taking credit for the GI Bill he opposed at a town hall meeting in Warren, Ohio.

Thats good to hear, but usually capital letter signify anger or contempt. Well personally I dont know enough about the bill to discuss specific parts that wasnt my point, I actually support giving extra incentives for our soldiers. My point is that these type of bills are used as blackmail for political motives and as a way to help their lobbyist buddies this is true for both parties.

I found the part that provided a blank check for collage as objectionable.

The bill called for the military to pay for ANY collage for as long as the person was a student.
With no limits or requirements.
It was the poison pill the democrats added at the last minute just to make sure the republicans would vote it down.
Now they have something they can hold over their heads but almost EVERYONE knows how bad of a bill it was and no one but a few partisan hacks care.

I don't see even ONE media outlet bringing it up. They know why it was shot down and quietly agree. They know why the dems did it and quietly don't want the discussion brought back up as a point of embarrassment for them.
They couldn't defend it then and can't now.

I think McCain's problem with the bill was that he feared it would severely cut down on reenlistments.

I fail to see the connection between the income he receives, and the reasons he opposed the bill.

You are aware that the bill passed with bipartisan support and was signed into law by President Bush, who also had previously opposed it,
Quote:
"Our nation has no greater responsibility than to support our men in women in uniform - especially because we're at war," Bush said. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=5276123&page=1
and that in the end even McCain did not vote AGAINST it, he just skipped the vote after previously opposing the bill.

Quote:
In the Senate, the vote was 75-22, with all Democrats (except the ailing Ted Kennedy) and most Republicans backing it.

One Republican did not even bother to show up for the vote, Arizona Senator John McCain.

But if he had shown up, McCain, a member of an elite family of military officers, said he would not have voted to provide education benefits for working-class soldiers, sailors and pilots.

"While I believe veterans deserve to be rewarded for their service, I do not feel that we should enact a program to give them blank checks and unreasonable benefits. I believe the bill in question is simply too generous in these hard economic times."
