Well today McCain in Gallup went from down 6 to down just 3 and is back within 1 in Rasmussen. McCain is still leading in VA, and gaining in PA, OH, MI, and even down just 4 in a Wisconsin poll. I would say since about 1 1/2 months ago McCain has really made this a winnable race for him.

Attached is the RealClearPolitics chart showing the average of the national polls. Note the sudden, steep drop for McCain in recent days.

If you look at the state-by-state averages, McCain is leading by 1 (statistically, a tie) in Virginia, a Bush state. Colorado, another Bush state, is up for grabs. He's losing Iowa and New Mexico, two other Bush states. He's trailing by greater than the margin of error in PA (-6%). Ohio's a tie only if you count the Rasmussen outlier that showed McCain winning by 10%. In Wisconsin, the average has him down by 7.2%.

Michigan is a battleground, but it's been leaning toward Obama since June.

I'm not saying McCain is toast, or even predicting an Obama win. I'm just noting, as I've said several times, the stupidity of the "Obama is toast" poll threads of recent days.
