In brief, I and my wife have modified our life and our career paths dramatically to accommodate our having and raising children. This is because for she and I, they come first before living where we "want to live," buying what we want to buy, working where we want and earning what we'd rather have. In other words, my family is disappointed to see Palin choosing to take on what we know to be a highly demanding job with tons of travel while they have a newborn with Down Syndrome (a situation that requires above-average work and attention) and the teenage daughter who will need a LOT of "being there" and guidance. For our family, this sort of job is exactly what I left and what I won't take again for a long time - if at all - because I decided that I'd rather be a Dad that's "there" for my kids rather than earning over 5 times the money we actually needed and "missing my kids play." This is a values difference, pure and simple. Just my and my wife's standpoint.
