Michelle Obama appointed vice president for community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals

May 9, 2005

Michelle Obama has been appointed vice president for community and external affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Obama, who was previously the executive director for community affairs at the Hospitals, will be responsible for all programs and initiatives that involve the relationship between the Hospitals and the community. She will also take over management of the Hospitals' business diversity program.

Hospital officials say Obama's wife deserved big raise.

Mark Memmott at 12:22 PM/ET, September 27, 2006 in Local news

Officials at the University of Chicago Hospitals say a promotion and large pay increase given to Sen. Barack Obama's wife shortly after the Democrat was elected to Congress were well-deserved boosts for an executive who is "worth her weight in gold." The Chicago Tribune has the story.

"She's terrific," added Michael Riordan, who was president of the hospital in March 2005, when Michelle Obama was promoted to vice president for external affairs and had her annual salary increased from $121,910 to $316,962.

"worth her weight in gold." Yea I'll say.

Obama Requested $1 Million For Construction Of A New Hospital Pavilion At The University Of Chicago. In 2006, Obama requested that the University of Chicago receive $1 million to support its Construction of New Hospital Pavilion. For more than 75 years, the University of Chicago Hospitals (UCH) has provided state of the art medical care on the South Side of Chicago. UCH is one of the largest Medicaid providers in Illinois, and it provided more than $90 million in uncompensated care for Medicare and Medicaid patients this past year. To continue providing the best care for patients from all walks of life, UCH is proceeding with the construction of a new 600,000 square foot facility that will ensure their ability to provide the best care for patients well into the future. Funding will go towards assisting the construction and equipping a new hospital pavilion that will increase the Hospitals' clinical capacity by over one-third.

Sen. Barack Obama's wife and three close advisers have been involved with a program at the University of Chicago Medical Center that steers patients who don't have private insurance -- primarily poor, black people -- to other health care facilities.

Michelle Obama -- currently on unpaid leave from her $317,000-a-year job as a vice president of the prestigious hospital -- helped create the program, which aims to find neighborhood doctors for low-income people who were flooding the emergency room for basic treatment. Hospital officials say such patients hinder their ability to focus on more critically ill patients in need of specialized care, such as cancer treatment and organ transplants.

I guess U of C Med center has connections in high places, the uninsured can just go elsewhere.

Change you can believe in!

Let me get this straight...

One of the largest hospitals in the state gets the money needed to expand "clinical capacity by over one-third" based on a request by Barack Obama.

Further, a program that "aims to find neighborhood doctors for low-income people who were flooding the emergency room for basic treatment" is partly created by Michelle Obama because uninsured patients have become known to be a overwhelming crush on ER's originally intended for critical emergency patients.

....and this turned into a sinister conspiracy in your mind?

LMAO!!!

Sen. Grassley Keeps Pressure on Non-Profit Hospitals

Posted by Alicia Mundy

Sen. Chuck Grassley is pounding on two non-profit hospitals demanding to know whether they restrict the care they give patients based on their ability to pay.

As ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, the Iowa senator has been bearing down on hospital tax breaks worth millions of dollars, saying he is concerned that non-profits are “losing sight of the public service that comes with tax-exempt status.”

The second letter went to the University of Chicago Medical Center, after the Washington Post ran a story about ties between the Obama campaign and the hospital, where Michelle Obama is an executive. Grassley raised questions about whether as a cost-saving measure, the hospital had funneled some patients from their emergency room into local free clinics.

The hospital defended that program, spearheaded by Michele Obama, telling the Post: “An ER visit for something that’s not an emergency costs the medical center $1,200. That’s sucking up dollars in health care that we don’t all have to just blow through carelessly.”

Is it a for profit business or not for profit business with taxpayers dollars available? You seem to lose sight of this VERY important difference.

Doubling Michelle's salary is such a philanthropic touch while turning away patients.

Lets have a look at the numbers shall we?

OK, Michelle Obama got a raise of $195,052 a year.
That's the equivalent of 1625 poor folks treated per year or approximately 140 a month, treated or turned away.

Her raise was a 62% increase in salary, any idea what exactly would justify that at the expense of 1625 poor people per year? Of course that was just her raise, to be certain she wasn't the only one.

While I support Obama, I don't think th man is perfect, the messiah or whatever the right is calling him this week.

I would like to see the particulars of this examined for the same reason I would like to see the particulars of TrooperGate and LibraryGate examined. How they handle the most sensitive matters is indicative of the character of and use of power by these candidates.

Shall we add Obama's association with Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko as well?

If you guys could make a case for there being a close, long-term associations with either of those people, I would look at it. All I've seen to date is 'he knows them socially and has had some business dealings with them in the past'.

I know a lot of people socially and have done business with them and I certainly don't see eye to eye with most of the folks in this solidly red state. One of my closest friends is a McCain supporter. I don't like her any less over it and we don't fuss about it. And it doesn't mean I support him.

Why not? After all, we've already got a good stack of irrelevance going in here. Throw on a few more layers!

I'd guess the position is either worth that money, or she earned it by achieving a cost savings through the program she helped start.

Don't be over-impressed with "62%". I've received a 42% raise at one job, due to exceptional performance. It's not unheard of.

Besides, your largest flaw here is that it's "at the expense" of poor people. Since they received the medical care they needed (for a few hundred dollars in cost instead of $1,200), you're in nowheresville on this one. Seems to be a pattern with you.

Bottom line: health care costs were reduced and more patients are now getting attention. I think you should report this to the FBI.
