This is getting no notice because of the economic crisis, but great news. Dem leaders are probably happy it's not getting any coverage. <g>

WASHINGTON - The House, responding to growing public demand for more domestic energy, voted Wednesday to end a quarter-century ban on oil and natural gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, giving Republicans a major victory on energy policy.

When the Republicans agree they are "bipartisan." When the Democrats agree they "caved."

There's no hope for America.

No....the Dems didn't "cave." They simply took notice of the large numbers of American people who told them they want this. And that's a good thing.....

Good; I'm okay with offshore drilling.

Personally, though, I think we should be looking at more offshore wind farms.

Delaware, by the way -- Biden's home state -- is pushing hard to become the wind-farm capital of the country.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/06/23/w...nes/index.html

The wind project won out in an open competition between it and two other proposals for conventional fossil-fuel plants, in response to a state law requiring Delaware to become self-sufficient in energy.

Unless this is a completely new bill, it bans drilling within 50 miles of the coast.

Basically, it is a political stunt that does not allow for any new drilling.

No that part didn't go anywhere.

Quote:
Just last week, the House passed legislation to open waters off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to oil and gas drilling but only 50 or more miles out to sea and only if a state agrees to energy development off its shore. It quickly became clear that measure would not get the 60 votes needed in the Senate.

Well that certainly is good to hear.

My one question is, when with the areas open up? 2 years, 10 years? And will the states have the right to ban drilling anyway?
