Default Will McCain HAVE to Drop Palin Now?

There are no words to describe what a horrible week this has been for the McCain campaign.

First, McCain's gamble of "suspending" his campaign -- which he never did, and the media called him on it.

Second, the rush to DC -- which the media (even Fox) are saying actually COMPLICATED the negotiations.

And now, the horrible, brain-dead job Sarah Palin did in the Couric interview.

How does he recover from this disastrous week? Will he have to drop Palin now?

Mayhaps. Some McCain insiders have said...

Quote:
Capitol Hill sources are telling me that senior McCain people
are more than concerned about Palin. The campaign has held
a mock debate and a mock press conference; both are being described as "disastrous." One senior McCain aide was quoted as saying, "What are we going to do?" The McCain people want to move this first debate to some later, undetermined date, possibly never. People on the inside are saying the Alaska Governor is "clueless."

Now, that IS Ed Schultz saying it, but he does not have a reputation as being a liar.

Then, there's the reviews from Sarah's performance on the Couric interview...

From the LA Times:

Quote:
Her third nationally televised interview, with CBS anchor Katie Couric, found Palin rambling, marginally responsive and even more adrift than during her network debut with ABC’s Charles Gibson....
Quote:
Palin's unblinking certitude gave way at other times in the interview to a striking imprecision, as when she struggled to respond to Couric's suggestion that the $700-billion bailout might be better funneled through middle-class families instead of Wall Street firms.

"That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, we're ill about this position that we have been put in . . ." Palin began, before meandering off in fruitless pursuit of coherence.
From the Kansas City Star:

Quote:
In the interview, Palin looks unprepared to be vice president (and certainly president) on a few occasions.

-- On the proposed economic bailout, Palin answered Couric's question and said she didn't support the bailout. But she did not state what was wrong with it or how running mate John McCain's amendments were going to supposedly make it better for the American people.

-- But the worst moment came when Couric bored in on whether Palin could give examples of when McCain had led the charge for more oversight of Wall Street. (Couric acknowledged that McCain had supported stricter regulations of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in 2006.)

Palin responded: "I think that the example that you just cited... that's paramount. That's more than a heck of a lot of other senators and representatives did for us."

Couric retorted that McCain "has been in Congress for 26 years. He's been chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee. And he has almost always sided with less regulation, not more."

Finally, Couric gave Palin one more chance, asking for "specific examples in his 26 years of pushing for more regulation."

Palin's lame answer: "I'll try to find you some and I'll bring 'em to you."
From The Oregonian:

Quote:
Ouch. Only one of the two women showed poise, focus and a good grasp of the facts, and it wasn't the one who's running for vice president.
From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Quote:
Palin is living, breathing proof that John McCain lies when he claims to put this country first over politics. She makes Dan Quayle look like Albert Einstein with a better haircut.

Here’s the clip. Go horrify yourself. Seeing it is worse than reading it.
From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

Quote:
Sarah Palin's interview with Katie Couric provided further proof that she is a clear and present danger to the nation.

The only people who can still say with utter sincerity that she is qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency are those who actually haven't a clue about what a president does. Once Palin gets sidetracked from repeating her simplistic talking points about being a maverick and cleaning up Washington and not ever, ever blinking in the face of a foreign threat, she quickly reveals the shocking shallowness in her knowledge of issues a candidate for high office should have contemplated long and hard.

I don't think she's stupid, I think she is much like George W. Bush -- incurious. She really hasn't thought about this stuff. Palin insults the intelligence of the nation when she makes claims about her qualifications that are patently ridiculous.
Do you really NEED more proof?

McCain is in a serious dilemma here. He's acting erratically, and his VP choice has the presidential qualifications of a springer spaniel.

He's prone to Hail Mary passes...

Listless campaign and lack of support from the right? Nominate Palin.

Hurricaine coming? Cancel the first day of the convention.

Wall Street Meltdown? "Suspend" the campaign, hurry to DC and screw up the negotiations.

What will his NEXT Hail Mary pass be?

Thoughts? Predictions?

LA Times seems pretty real to me. We are a 2 newpaper city where I live. One is a liberal paper an the other is a conservative one. Of course the liberal paper was very hard on her, but even the conservative paper did not have anything good to say about her last interview.

I read a piece on a comment Ben Smith made. He said yes this has been a bad week for McCain and he guessed that the reason McCain pulled this political stunt is because his week would've been worse if we were talking about Rick Davis and Palin's interview.

Here's an excerpt of what he wrote:
Quote:
But I'm not sure that's the right framework. The move strikes me as a modest success, and it's best considered against the alternative. Had McCain not abandoned ship yesterday, the news from his campaign would have been twofold: his campaign manager's ties to Freddie Mac, which the campaign hasn't been able to convincingly deny; and his running mate's truly unsteady interview with Katie Couric. (The fact that McCain also sat down with Couric yesterday suggests his campaign knew it had to counterbalance that interview.)
I also believe that McCain pulled this stunt to backlash his campaign manager's ties to Freddie Mac and Palin's horrible, hillarious interview.

Why not attack the sources themselves with some "real sources" instead of the validity of those sources. That would be a much more persuasive argument than "Waaaah! I want to be spoon-fed everything." I'm paraphrasing, of course.

KC Star is as conservative as they get. Except for now, of course, when they've suddenly become part of the vast liberal media conspiracy -- like the WSJ.

As true conservative Andre Sullivan put it, McCain's pick of Palin is "a farce". But frankly, I don't want McCain to drop her -- she's turning into a gift for people who want Obama to win.

Perhaps I'm thinking too much, but I'm beginning to wonder if McCain really just wants to throw this election so he doesn't have to face the judgment of history for the next four years of economic turmoil.

And now, the conservative National Review says Palin should drop out.

Quote:
If BS were currency, Palin could bail out Wall Street herself.

If Palin were a man, we’d all be guffawing, just as we do every time Joe Biden tickles the back of his throat with his toes. But because she’s a woman — and the first ever on a Republican presidential ticket — we are reluctant to say what is painfully true.

What to do?

McCain can’t repudiate his choice for running mate. He not only risks the wrath of the GOP’s unforgiving base, but he invites others to second-guess his executive decision-making ability. Barack Obama faces the same problem with Biden.

Only Palin can save McCain, her party, and the country she loves. She can bow out for personal reasons, perhaps because she wants to spend more time with her newborn. No one would criticize a mother who puts her family first.

Do it for your country.

Have anyone actually drop a VP candiate in the middle of a run? I think this may be 1st right? I seriously doubt it will happened, there is no way for McCain to justify it. They got what they want from her already, which is that initial bounce and lots of distractions from the real issues.
