Default Moderator For VP Debate In the Tank For Obama.

Who knew right?

What a joke.

Gwenn Ifill, will be moderating the VP Debate tomorrow night. Only problem is, there is a HUGE conflict of interest with her doing this.

What is that conflict of interest?

She has written a book about Barack Obama, that is scheduled to come out on Inauguration Day. She has effectively called our current time: The Age of Obama.

Her book is entitled: The Breakthrough, Politics and Race In the Age of Obama.

Hardly a non-biased view. How can someone, or an organization like the CPD (Commission of Presidential Elections) not take this financial conflict of interest into account?

This woman looks to gain financially from having Obama win this election, if he were to lose, she her own book would be rendered meaningless and not make any money for her.

That is not all she has done for Obama. In the magazine Essence, she has written a story on the Obama family titled: "The Obamas: Portrait of an American Family.” Hardly, a neutral position.

Question is, out of 300 million people, the CPD couldnt find someone who hasnt written a magazine story or a book in support of Barack Obama?

Just a little to much coincidence here.

Is there anybody out there in the journalistic pool, who isnt an idealog these days?

This is unexceptable.

Um, I don't see how the titles are biased. I can see them being positive, but biased? Hmm... Are they not an "American Family?" And his move into the democratic ticket is huge. First black man on a POTUS ticket... I think that can be coined "Age of Obama" just for that fact. I would have to read the book to see what she says though in the book. Is there a summary of the book out yet? Actually, I found it. Here it is:

In THE BREAKTHROUGH, veteran journalist Gwen Ifill surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.

Ifill argues that the Black political structure formed during the Civil Rights movement is giving way to a generation of men and women who are the direct beneficiaries of the struggles of the 1960s. She offers incisive, detailed profiles of such prominent leaders as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama, and also covers up-and-coming figures from across the nation. Drawing on interviews with power brokers like Senator Obama, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and many others, as well as her own razor-sharp observations and analysis of such issues as generational conflict and the "black enough" conundrum, Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in American history.

THE BREAKTHROUGH is a remarkable look at contemporary politics and an essential foundation for understanding the future of American democracy.

How is that "In the Tank?" It's a history of the rise of Black politicians all the way to Barack's candidacy.

What did I tell you? At 5:30 this morning, I said that there would be breathless outrage about this, even though the book is CLEARLY about how Obama's campaign has energized young Black Americans about getting involved in this country's affairs.

But when you don't read past a Drudge headline, I guess it's only natural that you're gonna get upset about stuff that is purely and perfectly innocent.

Cmon Buddy. The book arrives on Inaugural Day.

Do you think she'll sell more or less books on that day if Obama is elected President?

Yawn.
All people are BIASED.
That's why I get tired of all this crap about who is on what news show, who is moderating what, etc.
It doesn't matter what they believe... It's what they ask.

It's bad form for a moderator to inject him/herself too far into a debate... and quite noticable. She's going to have to avoid that... or it will be noticable.
There isn't a whole lot a moderator can do to shift a debate without it being noticed.

I mean... what can she do? Pick questions she knows Palin can't answer?
That would be GOOD MODERATING... as Palin SHOULD be able to answer ANY question.

Now granted, I'd like to see Jim Lehrer moderating every debate because he is awesome... but I have to believe... he himself has bias.

In other words, you cannot assume a debate will be biased before it happens. The ability to remain "objective" in journalism is a skill... not a personality trait.
And frankly I tend to trust people who are upfront over their biases over those who pretend not to have them.

More of course... so what? I bet you that was the publisher's decision in terms of a business tactic. If you read the summary above, there is nothing in it that really points to her being in the tank... sheesh.

Well, she WAS "snippy" with Cheney once when he asked for more time than his 30 seconds and she turned him down.

I would have to agree. As American citizens, they will all vote for someone. Unbiased journalism in that sense doesn't exist.

...and since the book doesn't come out until AFTER the election, maybe Mr. Hat might share with us how it could possibly affect the election... or this debate?
