Getting desperate for something to complain about, I see...
Obama is a dream name for crossword makers. It can easily cross three other words. McCain... not so easy.
It's VERY significant.
Because chances are that, unless it is a theme crossword, the total puzzle is not built around the name of a politician.
Crosswords are created with the help of software that finds words that fit into certain positions with other words.
Considering that most of the work is done by a computer (the clues are the creative part), it makes sense that a word that is highly likely to fit in a variety of possible spots would come up a lot.
"McCain" is a particularly difficult name... The two vowels are NEXT TO EACH OTHER. So unless a puzzle is built around "McCain", it requires a point where an M, a C, or an N are parellel to a vowel... and often where a C, an A, and an N are parellel (the I is going to get far less use).
"Obama" only requires a time when two A's or an A and an O or all three are parellel... This is going to be a rather common occurrence.
As for Palin and Biden, they seem to have almost equal chance (though the E is definitely the letter with the most chance)... but there is an even simpler answer. Biden has been in the senate since the time Palin thought dinosaurs walked the earth... Palin was a governor a couple years ago... and has not been famous until a few weeks ago. I guarantee you no puzzle program was going to have the mayor of a small Alaska town in it.
So... contrary to the article's whining... the answer about the letters he poo-poos is EXTREMELY relevant and the best answer.
Obviously the writer of the article has never attempted to design a crossword and is not even aware of how they are constructed (a computer does it- with some minor tweeking afterword to get rid of really off-the-wall, antiquidated answers).
