Default Obama's Reader Digest Interview

Sep 2008 Readers Digest Obama, McCain Interview
Parantheses added by myself.
Quote:
Q: The cliche is that anybody could grow up to be president. If you win in November, does that make it true, finally? Does it complete Lincoln's work?
A: There is no doubt that if I win the presidency, then the adage "Anybody can be president" is true. If you (one) took a look at all the babies who were born in 1961, (then) the odds of me being president probably would not have been at the top of the list.
How about none of the babies would have been at the top of the list! This is not a country of nobility. You are not born into presidential succession you dunce.

Quote:
Q: Your mother was a freethinker, but would even she have imagined this? How about your father?
A: My dad might have imagined it because he, from all accounts, was pretty (good place for a break) full of himself. [Laughs] And your (one's) mother always thinks (that) you're special - that's one of her jobs - and so I'm not sure she would have been surprised. My grandmother, who is my only living elder, I do think she's a little overwhelmed by it. She's very stoic, stiff-upper-lip type of person. If you think about it, this is a white woman from a small town in Kansas who grew up in the midst of the Depression. To imagine, first of all, that she'd end up having a grandson who was (is) African American and then that he might end up being president - that's a pretty big leap of imagination.
So Obama has rejected his European American decent and is claiming to be full African American?

Perhaps I will post more of the Q&A in the future...

How about the next question:

Quote:
Q: We keep hearing people say, "My head tells me McCain, but my heart tells me Obama." What would you tell those voters?
A: John McCain is a genuine American hero. He has rendered extraordinary public service to this country, and he has on numerous occasions been willing to buck conventional wisdom in his party. But I also think the country recognizes we're at a critical juncture and that the challenges we're going to face in the 21st century are different from the ones that we faced in the 20th century.
What a jerk!!

Or his last question:

Quote:
Q: What is the best thing about John McCain's appeal, the best thing about his candidacy?
A: John captures a code of honor, a love of country that is really important and sometimes gets lost in the materialism and the superficiality of modern culture. I think there's a sense that he has been forged by extraordinary hardship, so that he is willing to sacrifice on behalf of the country, and I think that is not lifted up enough in our culture today. It has always been something that we need.
The bastard!!

The answers don't stop at the paragraph break. If you are not going to be thorough then keep your trash out of my thread.

Wow! When we create threads, we own them?
This I did not know.

That's gonna make putting up with some of the homophobes over in GayTown (my fun little name for the GLBT section of this fine forum) a whole hell of a lot easier. I can just order them out!

Freedom!
(not in any way shape or form calling the OP here a homophobe. He/she has actually contributed very substantially to threads over there. End of public service announcement)

As to the answer Obama gave in the first question posted---
how in the world did anyone read that and assume he was talking about nobility and being "born into the presidency"?
Aside from any baby born that year with the name Kennedy attached firmly to it's new baby behind, I would think the odds yes, were firmly against any child born growing up, automatically to be CiC; but come on, in 1961--a black baby, or even "worse" a mixed race baby?
In that time period, in that era, the odds had to be astronomical.

The second answer does. And all the first answer goes on to do is expand on why Obama is the better choice than McCain. Nothing embarassing there.

Sorry if I interrupted your selective quote fest.

In 1961 to say that a brown baby would be president would have gotten you laughed out of most bars, or worse.

His grandma came from a time where white people didnt have mixed race grandchildren as often as you see it now. It was rare. So you would not imagine that you would have a African American grandchild. What should he call himself in your view. Africpean American? In this country, for reasons I really dont fully understand, even if you are only 1/2 black you generally refer to yourself as 'African American'. The term fits as you are 1/2 African and 1/2 American. I have yet to meet a mixed race person you refers to themselves as Caucasian. I am not sure I agree with that because you are an American first no matter the color of your skin, but there you are. Both your point are trivial and silly.

If your best argument against Obama is that his name sounds like Osoma, or that his parents were not married, or that he is a Muslim, or anything that includes the word elitist then you are an example of how far the Republican party has fallen.

Palin won’t say whether veep is an executive post - Does this scare anyone else? It terrifies me.

Probably the biggest irony of this election is that there is a possibility of having a Palin-Pelosi administration in the next 8 years.

Save it for the time between when he's elected and inaugurated. You're gonna need some cheering up.
