Icon7 Maybe this time we should elect the smart guy.

I don't know. I'm thinking this time maybe we should hire the smart guy.

Eight years ago we elected the guy we wanted to have a beer with, even though we understood that he was kind of stupid and couldn't even construct a simple sentence or pronounce the word nuclear. Times were good and we all thought, well, what harm can he do, he'll surround himself with smart people, but he'll represent us because he understands us, he's one of us.

Yeah.

Now eight years later, we stand here in the smoking wreckage of our economy, in the middle of two wars, with millions of unemployed. Basic healthcare and college are completely out of reach for most Americans. Our country is hated all over the planet, Osama bin Laden is still laughing at us from Pakistan. Gas is $4 dollars a gallon, the institutions of govenment have been sold out to corrupt corporations, even the justice department has been turned into a political tool, and we're about to increase our national debt to 11 trillion dollars, and yet we're considering John McCain and Sarah Palin because we feel more confortable with people who are "more like us", even if they are a little dumb and more than a little dishonest. What's the worst that could happen?

Hmmmm. No, I think this year I'm going to vote for the smart guy, Barack Obama.

Yeah... we went the "dumb guy" route for the last 8 years, and look what that got us.

I would say we should probably go with the smart guy this time.

Same here. Except I'd rather have my root beer with Obama than any of the other three and he is the smart guy. I'm blessed!

I just don't understand their reasoning. It's like they're completely blind to what's been going on for the last eight years. Is it possible that they've simply become so indoctrinated by Faux news that they can't see the truth or they just don't care what happens to this country.

Really???? Why didn't you put her on the ticket, instead of Sarah Palin who is really, just George W. Bush with lipstick?

It's not about being blind to the last 8 years. I'm not proud of Bush as a Republican, but I am also very aware of what a Presidents responsibilities are and what the responsibilities of the Senate, House, and Congress are. You are only looking on the surface if you truely believe Bush is responsible for the mess we're in. There are lots of fingers to be pointed, which Obama and Biden seem to do a lot of.

Besides, Obama is not running against Bush. He's running against McCain. I certainly hope you are not indicating McCain is stupid. If you don't agree with his policies, that's fine, but just because the fundamentals of the conservative ticket vs. those of the liberal ticket are different does not make the opposition stupid. Also, if you believe McCain is "another Bush" just because he's a republican, you are once again mistaken. Listen to what Lieberman has to say about the two candidates! Nobody was calling Lieberman an idiot when he was running for VP with Gore. He is very supportive of McCain because he knows McCain is not going to be "another Bush".

A law degree does not qualify one as "smart enough" to be President. Putting on a good speach does not qualify one as "smart enough" to be President. Again, I'm no longer a fan of Bush, but if a vote is going to be as shallow as "who's the smartest", it should be a tough decision.

The only problem with this argument is that 8 years ago, no one smart was running.

I think most Americans will correctly hold George Bush and the Republicans in general primarily responsible for the mess our country is in.

I know a lot of people, including members of congress and the public, were deceived by Bush's lies, especially about 9/11 and Iraq, so in that sense we all share some responsibility for allowing ourselves to be stampeded by a carefully choreagraphed campaign of fear and deception. Hopefully we'll be more suspicious this time and reject the Republicans and the politics of fear.

As to your argument that McCain is not Bush. Yes he is. If McCain is elected he'll have the same trickle down economic philosophy as Bush and the same war is always the answer foreign policy.

As for Ms. Palin, she's even more like Bush than McCain is.
