Who is your idea of a "true conservative?"

  • True conservatives were fiscally conservative (none of the borrow and spend crap seen from Reagan, GHWB or GWB).
  • They were for smaller government in general - they would have never created the Department of Homeland Security.
  • They were for more emphasis on states determining laws within states rather than federal laws and constitutional amendments superseding states rights - they would have never tried to push for a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
  • They understood the wall of separation between church and state - they would have never supported making laws based on religious beliefs nor forcing churches to abide by civil rights type laws.

Taking this one as an example how far back in history do you have to go to find a real Conservative? When did the GOP start meddling in abortion?

I believe Richard Nixon was the bridge (to nowhere ) between the conservative and neo-conservatives within the GOP. Reagan was a fiscal neo-conservative while being more socially conservative. GHWB was a fiscal neo-con and the first to bring religioun into politics (toward the end of his term as I recall) and GWB is neo-con thru and thru.

affirmative action = good but misunderstood.
