Face time on TV.. get message out to your ground troops & people.
A lot of it is pep rally and fundraising for the local party faithful.

Adolph Hitler was the first to campaign using moderen means, such as airplanes to quickly fly him from place to place. I believe the year was 1929 or so when the Nazi Party won a controling number of seats in the German Parlament. LBJ used to rent a helicopter and loud speaker. The helicopter alone drew huge crowds, as they were very rare in those days. LBJ would shout through the loud speaker while hovering above, urging folks to vote for him. Nixon was one of the first to use focus groups in determining what it was people wanted to hear him say, and how they responded to what they heard. Hillbilly mastered the focus group approach of speaking.
Reagan was classic, not because he purposed in being so likable and well received, but because it came so natural to him. He pulled it off because it really was who he was. Others trying to imitate Reagan come across as phony. W, while unlike Reagan in many ways, also comes across as genuine and mostly likable. And like Reagan, W can do it because like Reagan, he is very much himself. Reagan and W are both very comfortable in their skin. Lurch was never comfortable in his skin, and Hillbilly didn't have a conscience, so he could pull it off so easily. Hillbilly doesn't have skin.

maybe you and EuP can write a love story about it.
Nixon obviously forgot to shave before he went on camera and liked to break into offices while capitlaizing on the "assassination" of Bobby....and Senior likes to look at his watch |

I think people campaign, because it is just what you do when you run for office. It is not the message you send as being some new phenomenal method which will change the world, but it lets the states know that you as a candidate are aware of them and their state's needs. I think just being present in a state and giving them face time makes them feel important. Does it sway votes. I am not sure.
