Default The Only Solution?

The major republicans in the Senate say we should drill.

The major democrats in the Senate (Pelosi) say we should tap into the Strategic Pteroleum Reserve.

Both sides came up with legitimate and logical arguments against the other. Drilling would not help for many years, and even then barely would.

Tapping into the oil reserve would lower gas by something like one tenth of a penny (according to Ben Stein).

So what I don't understand is, why not just use alternative renewable energy sources? Wind, Hydro, Solar. It seems like the only solutions are conserve, and alternative sources.

What I am unsure of is, how are the aforementioned sources an alternative to oil?
