Default Turkey's military calling for operation in Iraq vs. Kurds

I doubt it would be approved by the Turkish gov't but I think it adds to the turmoil in Iraq.

http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exer...FA08CA97F5.htm

Quote:
The head of Turkey's army has called for a military operation in northern Iraq to target its Kurdish rebels hiding there.

General Yasar Buyukanit, the head of the army's general staff, made the assessment on Thursday but said the army had not asked parliament to authorise any such operation.

"From the military point of view, a [military] operation in northern Iraq must be made," Buyukanit said.

"The PKK has huge freedom of movement in Iraq... It has spread its roots in Iraq."

However Buyukanit said that even if the military favoured such an operation, it would have to be authorised by the government.

"If you ask me whether a cross-border operation is needed, yes it is needed. It would be useful," the general told a rare press conference.

"But there is a second dimension to that: it requires a political decision."

Default .

They've crossed into Iraq a few times in the recent past.
I doubt they' do anythign overt in the current situation.

If the US/ALLEIS betray their words and run out on the Iraqis in the face of Terrorists. Then yeah they will overtly cross into Iraq..hell maybe even annex the northern half of the country.

The "Wests" word won't be worth a (*)(*)(*)(*) in that eventuality and Turkey is not likely to be stupid enough to buy into the empty promises of allies who couldn't even handle Iraq. I wouldn't be shocked that in that event they moved out of NATO to get closer with Russia. Since they will be desiring and looking for allies that are worth having.

This shows that other factions are seeing Iraq as a target. they know that things are unstable in Iraq and the US is divided on whether to retain or pull out the troops. they are just waiting to move in once the opportunity presents itself.

We've already had this topic on the boards.

Only then it was about how Bush was arming Kurds as insurgents again Iran but that the problem may cross into Turkey. So no surprises here.

This situation has been going on in one form or another for 100's of years.
Bush has as much to do with it as you do.

Besides the fact I replied to someone right above me...
It would have taken a whole second of reading to garner the context of my reply.
