Locking Threads - reply from the admin
There is no set rule on locking threads, except that most threads currently being locked are in "Current Events". Sometimes threads get way off topic and even off politics in general. Other times they have so many posts that its just time to close it (usually 4 or more pages). Often the topic is somewhat stale, especially when someone posts on an old topic and brings it to the top. Generally we're trying to encourage activity on new topics with threads that are more managable to new and old users alike. If your topic gets locked and you wish it to continue it, you can start a fresh thread with a link to the locked included. Another alternative is to ask us to move the thread to a different category that's appropriate, and we could unlock it and let it continue a while longer. We're trying to preen "Current Events" to be more about actual current topics in the world of politics. If you ever post anything that you think could really be in two categories, email us with a link to the initial thread and we'll consider creating a link in a different category (means they'll show up and you can post from both places).
