Default Profanity

Just wondering, what exactly offends people when it comes to profane words?

It can't be the meaning behind the word because there are acceptable words in our language that have the same meaning.

I'm not sure, but I think it comes down to the sound of the word. Since the definitions themselves don't seem to be the factor, I suspect certain vibrations of our vocal chords are enough to offend some people. In the culture I live in, profane words are used very regularly. Even as a child my parents would gripe at me about it but then a few minutes later they would use the same words themselves. Why did humans come up with this prohibitive-vocal-chord rule?

I posted this mainly because I saw that this topic got locked.

Isnt it obvious?

It is the derogatory meaning it gives the word or act that it represents. It also shows a general lack of courtesy and respect for those around you. Some people also believe it is a sign of ignorance. More often than not, when someone is using one of those words, they are using it to describe what the word actually means. They have become a means to express feelings without articulation. Yet another sign of low intelligence.

Do you think it is right to use racist words to describe a person of another race?

Default Swearing

I used to think swearing was quite a liberated thing to do, especially within a conservative society. Now, I really dislike it. Although spoken words could be described as vibrations in the air, they do contain a meaning and a feeling for those who understand the language.

Themeaning of swear words is usually a coarse way of describing things (some of which are beautiful e.g. making love). They usually have some sort of ugly connotations, even violent and intentionally shocking.

Refinement of speech is one of the virtues we can aspire to because it makes social situations pleasant and helps create unity in a group.

Even if this theory does not convince, I am sure our experience shows to us that an environment without swearing is far more pleasant than one where it occurs.

I don't know what was more interesting. Him being censored, or the conversation that took place after.

But I did learn a new fake word today

Swearing doesn't bother me in the slightest. The F word is said so many times, it's just another word like any other, really. No really to be insulted over it.

I do consider words that are derogatory to be profanity, and many of these words are highly insulting.
