This is hilarious to me!! Most posters complain about the "fascist mods" moderating too much, but herk is complaining about under-moderating! I agree herk that racism is distasteful, but billy is pretty funny otherwise. Also, he will be racist wether he is allowed to post these things or not, so the mods censoring it really does nothing but keep it away from public scrutiny!!

I've been on political boards for about 7 years now (Stekim can vouch for this).

The best way to deal with racists is to allow them to spout their nonsense, in the light of day, out in the open, thus exposing them to ridicule for their silly and bizarre ideas. I have multiracial kids, and on other boards have been called things like "race traitor" and "untermenschen liebe" (subhuman lover). I let it slide off my skin like water off a duck's back.

Yes I know what it says in the TOS. Perhaps it is time for the admin to update it with how the board is moderated.

Just post on the merits of the posts above yours, and leave them in the threads where they belong.

Another thread pops up, and deal with it accordingly.

The thing that strikes me about this, is that herk has always seemed to me to be a calm and thoughtful poster. I have never known him to get so worked up! I hope this actually doesn't make you leave herk, because you can't take this stuff too seriously!! When I first came on this forum, I really got into it with publius, and I realized I was on all the time, but I was having no fun. Once I realized that, I decided not to take any of this seriously!! Because when you look at it, it really is not serious at all, the discussions on here won't effect public policy. So just relax, and have fun, and dont take things too seriously!!


PS.. It is especially important that you don't take publius seriously, because that will make you want to stab out your own eyes!!

I just wanted to at least have my say, that I find overt racism to be offensive.

Any lurkers out there, who read mostly and don't post. Understand the racist posts do not reflect upon anyone but the one's typing them.

Herkdriver, the reality is that this is not going to change. Aside from the fact that the entire forum disagrees with your opinion of what should be allowed, it really comes down to this: The TOS is whatever the Admin (and, by proxy, the Mods) wants it to be. Right in the TOS is says that it is at their discretion.

If it pisses you off, leave. I dont see the point of this long goodbye. You're not going to get what you want.

I think where we differ is in approach. The best way to deal with ignorance, in my opinion, is in the free exchange of ideas. That's how we expose bad ideas to the light of day. I think Canada's approach of censoring offensive speech is a bad idea, in the long run. And of course, anti-American (but we're talking about Canuckistan, so it's unsurprising).

The next speech that someone deems offensive could be yours. For instance, people have been subjected to criminal prosecution in Canada for posting sections of the bible deemed offensive and in violation of the hate speech laws. True story, do some research.

Watching what has happened in Canada has reaffirmed my commitment that while I might disagree with what someone says, I'll fight to the death to defend their right to say it. Of course, if you read the f**k the military thread, you'll see that I also actively mock people for absurd, stupid, and hypocritical ideas. THAT is VERY American.

Maybe we'll take a poll and see what the members think. The Mods are of one mind. I know that. I wonder what percentage of members agree with the Mods? It's not the Mod's board. It's everyone's. If the majority think hate speech should be edited, we would certainly look into doing it.

I'm not calling for specific posters to be banned. I acknowledge the 1st amendment...I understand that discretion is given to the Moderators regardless of specifics in the TOS.

I just haven't seen too many folks actually challenging some of these comments.
