I banned the person who got banned today. In point of fact, I agreed with his philosophical position, but not how he conducted himself. When asked to refrain from personal insults, he told a mod to "f**k off." He was edited several times. When I intervened in the thread, I told people that they needed to conduct their discussion about the mod actions in an appropriate forum, that it did not belong where it was occurring, and I moved the relevant post so it could be discussed in the forum help section of the board. That wasn't enough, and the member kept trying to pursue the personal issue with the other mod on the topical thread. After four warnings, he was given a temporary time out.

(3-day ban).

I consulted with three other mods regarding that decision, all were in agreement.

This board does not tolerate personal insults, and the posts that were removed had NOTHING to do, whatsoever, with the political leanings of the mods. In fact, I'd already expressed my feelings about the issue ON THE THREAD, and it was in agreement with those who received warnings, infactions, and ultimately, a banning.

Were you so inclined, you can check the time and date stamp of the deleted posts, as well as my responses on the edits. I have no reason to misrepresent my actions, I didn't have a dog in that fight, other than to enforce forum rules. I think I am well-known to be one of the harshest critics of times in which Islamic societies have used criminal sanctions against a variety of groups: women, gays/lesbians, and non-muslims. This is well-documented on the religion thread, where I have often been called an Islam basher. The irony of being a mod is that generally speaking, we're always pissing someone off. Hence my signature, from last week.

I believe you. I am at a loss why anyone like you would want to be a maude, but that's just me.

I were king I would ban crazies and uninteresting spammers that's it, and allow most anything. Bans would be very serious actions and temporary...as you sad the recent banning is.

I've been at places where control freaks demand rule be followed and where rats rule and the places die. I've also been banned by every partisan site as I have an aversion to groupthink.

I have great respect for the other mods here, they're awesome people, every single one of them. And I'm not just saying that because I'm one of them. I've been here since 04 and never thought I'd want to be a mod, but I kind of like it, actually.

A couple of things to think about.

The site is still running in spite of the fact that I've been a mod here for over 3 years.

Mods come in assorted ideological colors and hold each other accountable. We see everything so you don't have to. Just have fun and only worry about your own rule-breaking.

Today you had a couple of newbies who came in thinking they could bully me into allowing them to break the rules. They thought they should be able to choose what free speech could be allowed and what couldn't. The restrictions to free speech are in the guidelines and won't change just because a few newbies get together and think they should.

There's a difference between fighting with mods and asking for clarification. A big difference.
