I have had cats for over 30 years. They are loving, clever, funny, immaculate and never boring. While it is true they are not as demonstrative as dogs, they also do not require being taken out. Also, if you gradually nurture a feral cat, it will become yours in time. I have three, and all of them were rescued by me. They all needed a home.

Rarely, very rarely is a cat rabid. That is the lament of the unaware. Most strays would welcome a home but have been abused, so they are initially afraid. Start with a little patience, and a "have a heart trap" with a can of tuna. Sometimes it takes weeks until the cat feels secure. If you get him to the vet, at least he will be neutered, which is the most important thing. Eventually, if you feed him, he will come home. If possible, try to have an entrance and exit door for him so he doesn't feel trapped. It works every time. By the way, if there is a loose rat in the area, the cat will certainly get him. The cats earn their keep.
