It takes a state of mind that I don't even understand to say "Gosh, my dad's a jerk, I think I'll marry a lesbian to get back at him". And rivalry? I mean, I guess showing up your dad and proving you're better than him is something that might motivate some people, but again I can't even fathom what that has to do with marrying a lesbian.

I married a woman!". Or maybe he's straight, but his dad was speaking out against his lesbian friend. But then you say his parents are perfectly liberal in these regards, so even that is not likely. The scenario just doesn't make sense.
