How do I make my sexuality an issue? By holding hands? By not hiding? By demanding that I be treated equally as an American citizen?
There are states that grant the same benefits to gay couples as straight couples. Not every state has a populace willing to extend the definition of marriage to include same-sex partnerships. That's just the way it is. You're not going to win that battle by pissing and moaning about it.

You don't hear about "Straight pride rallies", or "Straight Pride Month", or the "Heterosexual rights movement" - why do gays think that just "being gay" makes them special or that most people (other than them) could care less if they're gay or not? I call this homo-narcissim.
Why do Straight men and women believe that just being born straight is something to take pride in , or base ones personal identity on ?
Need I go on ? See what a mess you are in ?
You actually get even deeper into the mire with the remainder of your Post .
You miss the blindingly obvious -- that you don't need to celebrate something that society has come to assume is the normal and , worse , where some people not conforming to the "normal" are judged to be mutants and perverts .And with the most perverted of all groups , not even God's favoured children .
I am confident that you are far more homophobic than you imagine .

So you want to get married for the benefits? Why do you care if it is called marriage or something else?

And does that make you feel good? When you're picked on for something?

Actually, it's not. The people that don't care will always not care, and the people that are opposed to it will always be opposed to it. By celebrating your sexuality, you are actually doing more harm to the people that are otherwise apathetic than changing anyone's mind.
You know, you're right. That's why we don't have this thing called the civil rights act, because after all, being racist is okay in todays day and age.

I don't care one way or the other. Being picked on in my field means people care, so it can be associated with a positive.

It's a bit of a stretch to compare the plight of the gays with the civil rights movement. Almost insulting.

Is this a bad joke or did you really not get what I meant?

Only states with legal same sex marriage extend those rights. The federal government does not recognize same sex marriage at all at this time.
There is no state that has civil unions for same sex couples that have the same rights as marriage. Some come close, but none are the same.
