So angry for a Buddhist. I always admired the religion that had a god/idol that was more out of shape than me.

If you think my post was angry--ha. You are WAY more sensitive than I am. I thought PC was anaethema to you?

The fat 'buddha' happens to be a Taoist deity. Most Buddha images are slim. Buddha isn't a God or an idol.

You are a bit misinformed about Buddha and Buddhists. Do you prefer to stay that way or are you interested in clearing that up?

What is a deity? I have never seen a slim Buddha, only the fat ones with no teeth.

1. a god or goddess.
2. divine character or nature, esp. that of the Supreme Being; divinity.
3. the estate or rank of a god: The king attained deity after his death.
4. a person or thing revered as a god or goddess: a society in which money is the only deity.
5. the Deity, God; Supreme Being

The chubby Buddha is not representative of all Buddists.

A deity is another name for God. Buddha is not a deity. Buddhism is non-theistic.

There are such a thing as meditational deities. That is completely different from Buddha.

The one in my current avatar is Tara, the female Buddha. She is also a 'meditational deity' which means she is an image used in mediation to bring forth positive qualities. Her entire form is symbolic, and we don't give her 'reality' on a absolute level. She can be understood as an aspect of wisdom and skillful means. Meditating on a image of Tara is a way to move out of ordinary mind. This is a peaceful image of Tara.

There are wrathful images too.

Today is Tara day BTW.

Now I am really confused - Fat Buddha is a Taoist deity - Deity is another name for God - Yet fat buddha is not a God. Did I get this right?

The figure depicted in many Chinese restaurants is a fat god or deity. Some refer to him as a Buddha because he is obviously an asian image, but it is debateable about whether he is a Buddha or a God.

I've done quite a bit of study on this. Taoism is another religion common to China pre-communism. The Taoists have a deity that looks fat.

The Buddha was fasting for six years. He wasn't fat.

Fat deities tend to be wealth deities. And it can mean the wealth of spiritual qualities that he is 'rich' with. To be fat in a peasant culture means to be wealthy.

Buddha never spoke about God. Buddha means 'awake'. In Tibetan the term is sang gye which means to remove and to unfold.

What is removed in enlightenment are obscurations and what enfolds are qualities of love, compassion, joy and equanimity.

Deity does not mean the same thing in a theistic religion as it does in a non-theistic religion. Deity in a theistic sense is God. In a non-theistic sense is a symbolic image depicting qualities of a state beyond conception, a state accessible in the here and now--and within.

In regard to the OP what does the Bible have to say--it is irrelevant to anyone other than a Jew or a Christian. Since I am neither, it doesn't affect me personally. It affects me when citizens seek to impose their Christianity on me through legislation.

A fully enlightened Buddha would see past all divisions of gender, and sexuality to the common humanity and beyond that to consciousness itself. Consciousness has no form and is undivided.

Why should a vast majority of the population suffer to please an individual especially when it causes conflict and resentment?

It would be far better to promote a strong community that shares common values reducing conflict and giving more individual freedom within that community. The idea that all my personal misfortunes must be paid by others and I can do things that are offensive because it is my human rights is discussing.

Global liberalism and extreme capitalism will end in disaster and when it all collapses people will once again look at what they have in common and reform the individual nations that were destroyed in the liberal process.

The bible did not teach the promotion of difference and selfish sinful living but the promotion of common beliefs and self-sacrifice for others.
You seem the type that seems to like sacrificing...as long as it's someone else.
