Apparently, Dayton, Tennessee wants to update it's resume as the most anachronistic place in the US.

DAYTON, Tenn. — Rhea County (search) commissioners unanimously voted to ask state lawmakers to introduce legislation amending Tennessee's criminal code so the county can charge homosexuals (search) with crimes against nature. [emphasis mine]

"We need to keep them out of here," said Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the motion.

County Attorney Gary Fritts also was asked by Fugate to find the best way to enact a local law banning homosexuals from living in Rhea County.

The measure was quickly abandoned after a "wild-fire" of reaction.

I guess the page in the bible that tells how God loves all his children was ripped out of all their bibles.

As I am sure you would be aware, this community is solidly in favor of Bush. I guess if you can find a place that tried a teacher for having the temerity to teach evolution AND a community that hates gays, tha fact that they support Bush couldn't be a surprise.

I doubt it. Bigotry this obvious will not draw vocal supporters even if some here are of a like mind.

It does, though, show that the American south is the epicenter of culture and intellectual thought in the United States.

Id like to see gay activists organize the biggest gay pride parade ever in this backward ass community and would like to see it televised so I could see their backward ass faces.

That would do more harm than good.

All the WRONG people march in those parades. We have them in NYC all the time, and ultimately, what you get is men wearing nothing but leather thongs simulating anal sex in front of every church they pass. This only makes their cause LESS normal when what we need is for the normal gays (the vast majority) to come forward and show that they are living normal American lives.

When you need support from your community to achieve your civil rights, it makes no sense to reinforce bigoted sterotypes by acting like the bigots think you do. I get offended when I see such displays and I support gay rights; it is a present to the ignorant and bigoted masses when the militant gays take to the street.

Good point, it would have to be a very controlled and plotted event.
