Default Gay Activist Del Martin Dies

This is so sad...

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/US/08/27...ies/index.html

Quote:
Lesbian activist Del Martin, at the forefront of the battle for same-sex marriage in California, died Wednesday in San Francisco. She was 87.

Phyllis Lyon, left, and Del Martin, at home in 2004, founded the nation's first lesbian organization.
Martin's partner of 55 years, Phyllis Lyon, was by her side at the UCSF hospice, the National Center for Lesbian Rights said.
Martin and Lyon, 84, tied the knot June 16 in a ceremony officiated by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
May she rest in peace.

I just don't get it why the MoMos are so set on Prop 08???It seems the majority has spoken about their views. I have a hard time contemplating HOW a couple of women in their 80's are going to topple the "institution" of marriage for heterosexuals. My best friend gets really upset about this phenomenon, in spite of the fact that she's been married 4 times (2 times to the same violent abuser). If she really knew me (which she doesn't) I wonder what she'd think about me being Bi????

I don't know how anyone could look at these beautiful women and claim that the love they shared was wrong. How could it be wrong? They loved each other for 55 years - how many heterosexual marriages last that long? They will be sorely missed by all.

Many older couples have been together many years, it is the younger people that are the problem. They seem to jump from one marriage to another.
My grandparents were married many years, too, almost as long as they were.

I am saddened by the death of Del Martin. She was an extraordinary woman and worked her whole life for equal civil rights for gays and lesbians.

I'm so sorry she had to wait so long to be able to legal marry Phyllis Lyons. Phyllis will deeply grieve her. I will put Del on the prayer list at our Buddhist center and they will pray for her for the next 49 days.

She is truly a great American and will be dearly missed.

Del Martin (May 5, 1921 - August 27, 200[1] and Phyllis Lyon (born November 10, 1924) were an American lesbian couple known as feminist and gay-rights activists. They were a couple until Del Martin's death in Aug 27 2008. Martin and Lyon met in 1950, became lovers in 1952, and moved in together on Valentines Day 1953 in an apartment on Castro Street in San Francisco. They had been together for three years when they founded the Daughters of Bilitis (DOB) in San Francisco in 1955, that became the first social and political organization for lesbians in the United States. They both acted as president and editor of The Ladder until 1963, and remained involved in the DOB until joining the National Organization for Women (NOW) as the first lesbian couple to do so.

Both women worked to form the Council of Religion and Homosexuality (CRH) in northern California to persuade ministers to accept homosexuals into churches, and use their influence to decriminalize homosexuality in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They became politically active in San Francisco's first gay political organization, the Alice B. Toklas Democratic Club, influence Dianne Feinstein to sponsor a citywide bill to outlaw employment discrimination for gays and lesbians. Both served in the White House Conference on Aging in 1995.

They were married on June 16, 2008 in the first same-sex wedding to take place in San Francisco after the California Supreme Court's decision in In re Marriage Cases legalized same-sex marriage in California.[2] Martin died from complications of an arm bone fracture in San Francisco.[3]

Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons wrote the book, Lesbian Woman in 1972. It was one of the few books available to read when I came out as a lesbian.

“Del lived her life with great compassion, wit, tenacity, generosity and valor,” said Donna Hitchens, founder of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. “She inspired thousands of us to be more courageous and energetic than we thought possible. When faced with moments of fatigue, laziness or weakness, one had only to ask—‘What would Del and Phyllis do?’ While she will be greatly missed, her legacy will be cherished forever.”

“Ever since I met Del 55 years ago, I could never imagine a day would come when she wouldn’t be by my side. I am so lucky to have known her, loved her and been her partner in all things,” Lyon said. “I also never imagined there would be a day that we would actually be able to get married. I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to enjoy the ultimate rite of love and commitment before she passed.”

Martin is survived by wife, Phyllis Lyon, daughter Kendra Mon, son-in-law Eugene Lane, granddaughter Lorraine Mon, grandson Kevin Mon, sister-in-law Patricia Lyon, and the worldwide LGBT community.

a funeral plainsong from a
younger woman to an older woman
by Judy Grahn

i will be your mouth now, to do your singing
breath belongs to those who do the breathing.
warm life, as it passes through your fingers
flares up in the very hands you will be leaving

you have left, what is left
for the bond between women is a circle
we are together within it.

i am your best, i am your kind
kind of my kind, i am your wish
wish of my wish, i am your breast
breast of my breast, i am your mind
mind of my mind, i am your flesh
i am your kind, i am your wish
kind of my kind, i am your best

now you have left you can be
wherever the fire is when it blows itself out.
now you are a voice in any wind
i am a single wind now you are any source of a fire
i am a single fire

wherever you go to, i will arrive
whatever i have been, you will come back to
wherever you leave off, i will inherit
whatever i resurrect, you shall have it
you have right, what is right
for the bond between women is returning
we are endlessly within it

and endlessly apart within it.
it is not finished
it will not be finished

i will be your heart now, to do your loving
love belongs to those who do the feeling.

life, as it stands so still along your fingers
beats in my hands, the hands i will, believing
that your have become she, who is not, any longer
somewhere in particular

we are together in your stillness
you have wished us a bonded life

love of my love, i am your breast
arm of my arm, i am your strength
breath of my breath, i am your foot
thigh of my thigh, back of my back
eye of my eye, beat of my beat
kind of my kind, i am your best
when you were dead i said you had gone to the mountain

the trees do not yet speak of you

a mountain when it is no longer
a mountain, goes to the sea
when the sea dies it goes to the rain
when the rain dies it goes to the grain
when the grain dies it goes to the flesh
when the flesh dies it goes to the mountain

now you have left, you can wander
will you tell whoever could listen
tell all the voices who speak to younger women
tell all the voices who speak to us when we need it
tell the love between women is a circle
and is not finished

wherever i go, you will arrive
whatever i have been, i will come back to
wherever i leave off, you will inherit

whatever we resurrect, we shall have it
we shall have it, what is left

and you have left, what is left

i will take your part now, to do your daring
lots belong to those who do the sharing.
i will be your fight now, to do your winning
as the bind between women is beginning
in the middle at the end
my first beloved, present friend
if i could die like the next rain
i,d call you by your mountain name
and rain on you

want of my want, i am your lust
wave of my wave, i am your crest
earth of my earth, i am your crust
may of my may, i am your must
kind of my kind, i am your best

tallest mountain, least mouse
least mountain tallest mouse

you shall have put your very breath upon mine
i shall wrap my entire first around you
i can touch any woman,s lip to remember

we are together in my motion
you have wished us a bonded life

a funeral: for my first love and longtime friend
