US relations will improve when the communist thugs give up power. Oh, I forgot - Or when the libbies take power in the USA - whichever comes first.

Can't really see any immediate change in Cuba-US relationships for a while - as the Cuban regime have been planning this change of figurehead for a couple of years now - since Fidel became ill.

Think of it - the revolution is 49 years old. Young people of age 20 then are old now. I wonder how they feel about having wasted their whole lives in a poverty-stricken dictatorship? It's very sad.

but have we similarly handicapped our national interests in that country as well?
instead of exploiting our geographic advantage for being involved in cuban affairs we have excluded ourselves from any participation in that nation's affairs - other than locating gitmo there. doesn't that confer an economic advantage to other nations who do not retard investment in cuba? when change comes to the cuban government - beyond the dictator stepping down, we will be sucking hind teet (is there an emoticon for that?) now would seem to be a time when we massively engage in nation building as we would want to assure the replacement government - it is on the horizon - is one which is compatible with our national interests

So Castro goes to figurehead "retirement" like Lenin did.
Raul Castro runs Cuba and has for a lil bit anyway. Same Communist Dictatorship. Nothing changes.. Hopefully after Castro finally does die it will be motivation enough for the people/expatriots etc to force Communism out in that country.. one way or another. Problem is Raul has made sure he has the military and police sewn up behind him over the years. With Venezuelan aid which you can be damed sure that kook in Hugo will send if Raul calls. Wil make it hard and potentiallty extremelly bloody. Cubans fleeing Cuba to the USA and Cubans in the USA running guns etc into Cuba. ![]() US domestic politics.....another good reason to vote for McCain..or hell even Hillary.

This will change nothing.
The US isolation of cuba is not really a practical policy. It has had little to no effect on the regime, and it has probably cost the people of that country a whole lot more. The current policy exists for mainly symbolic reasons, of the US not wanting to feel like it conceded to a Soviet hold-out, and it will probably stay that way until communism is abolished in favour of liberal democracy. But in reality, the USA trades with dictators from east to west, no one would really care if Cuba was added to the list. It might even speed up democratization, it certainly wouldn't hurt.
