The system is getting weaker. My IMO it is because overall Americans are less interested in the system. They are happy to sit and watch Tv and do their own thing.

To be honest, I didn't read his POS either, nor do I care to. I have the feeling that our responses would be very similar if he tried to take my guns. And FWIW, I DO live in a state with a "make my day" law on the books.

It's not the actual system of checks and balances that's the problem; the actual system works just fine because of the reason that you mention. The real problem is that the system of checks and balances is losing its balance. In the original checks and balances system, the executive was the weakest of all three branches. Today, it is by far the strongest. Because of the abuses to the system that have happened since the Constitution was ratified, I see no reason to believe that the system of checks and balances will continue to be pushed aside by the government until the protection that it gives is no longer available. Having an armed populace is a kind of safety net and preventative factor. For one, the people would be able to directly resist government abuse. The second, the government would be less likely to become abusive if it knew what it would have to face.

Only if suicides are counted. According to the CDC's wisquars database, 12,682 people died in 2006 of homicide and legal intervention (i.e. violence) by guns. That's 34 per day.

Yes, but that's a low number. .67 kids per 100,000 were killed by guns in the U.S. in 2006 (Wisquars database). That's 404 total. Sure it's higher, but it's not that significant.


Please give sources for the individual countries listed. It's a very vague statement to make.

Exactly right. Not to mention it is impossible to remove all the guns from the street. You can take them away from the honest law abiding citizens but the criminals will get them anyway. All this would accomplish is to leave the honest citizen defenseless.
