Default Why people want to ban guns

I'm getting the general feeling that the people in support of banning guns is simply that they themselves don't carry a gun.

From their point of view gun control can only help. There may be some chance it'll prevent a shooting that might affect them. However since they don't have a gun they don't see how it could help them, and they don't seem to think much of the chance someone would stop someone on a rampage.

So they figure screw the constitution, the right to self defense, and the ability to go hunting etc for the people who do own guns, they do not care about them.

Now gun supporters could go around calling them names, pointing out how they don't support other measures the government wants to make to protect it's citizens like tapping calls to foreign countries because it so much as scratches the bill of rights. Or whatever.

But fundamentally people look out for number one. They aren't going to change their stance.

So I think that instead of legal battles more of an effort from people in support of the second amendment should be made to expose those who don't have and possibly have never seen a firearm to responsible gun ownership. Maybe invite them to a shooting range or something. Or maybe the NRA could subsidize first time gun owners or something. Or work on advertising weapons with safety measures like gun locks and with less lethal or overpenetrating types of ammo.

They want to ban guns because they fear that the people one day could have enough of being lied to all the time and may rise up! Taking away the power of the people is the first thing tyrants do!

Default Real Threat

I'm sure there are many reasons why people want to ban guns. Some people have been terrorized by someone with a gun. Some people grew up over-sheltered. Some people grew up with parents who hated guns and that's all they know to feel about them. Some people stereotype gun lovers with gang members or right wing anti-government types. Some people have survived horrific wars and have seen what guns can do when abused.

This is why education about guns is important. Ignorance towards guns further promotes a lack of respect for a device that demands respect in order to be used in a meaningful and responsible manner. Even if guns are banned, they will never go away. Someone will have them and someone will abuse others with them. So, once again, education is the key. Balance of power is a necessity. Don't ever give up your right to bear arms. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Cliche, but so true.

They trust the government to protect them even though the government cannot possibly protect everyone at all times. They also do not take into account that it may someday be the government that we need to protect ourselves from.
Apathy -> socialism -> big government -> oppression.

A lot of "anti-gunners" don't really understand the difference between illegal and legal gun ownership. Since a lot of them have had no exposure to guns in their day to day lives, the associate them with killing instead of sport shooting, hunting, and if necessary defense of one's life, property, or government.

Because the military protects politicians first and foremost. If my country was attacked, the first priority would be washington d.c. Organized gun ownership threatens to remove them from power.

It isn't all politicians by any stretch. I think most that do oppose guns are doing it for votes, or, especially useful, scapgoating them for complex issues they don't want to deal with.

For example in Philly a couple years back some drug dealers got into a running gun battle outside the school and wound up shooting a little boy. Of course despite over a hundred people being present over an exteded battle nobody saw anything.

The politicians answer? Guns are bad. I'll try to solve the problem by restricting gun rights. See it seems like they're doing something. Instead of addressing the obvious issues there that they have no idea how to deal with.

Although blacks in the US make up only 13% of the population they commit more than 50% of the crimes.

It seems that outlawing blacks would be more effective than outlawing guns....

That would unconstitutional as would banning guns. Outlawing poverty would get rid of more crime. Better education makes more sense than your ignorant racist policies.
