Restricted in Canada means you can only shoot them at approved ranges, and the only valid reason for owning them is recreational/professional target shooting or collecting. Plus you need government permission to transport them, and stricter storage regulations apply.
Well that is just frigging stupid!

[quote]There are two general ways for a gun to be restricted. Handguns are generally restricted (short handguns are prohibited) and centrefire semi-automatic rifles and shotguns with a barrel length of less than 18.5 inches are restricted.

That sucks.

Quote:
Then there is the third way, are the ones that are restricted due to "order in council" (arbitrary government decision).

Basically, the AR-15 was one of the firearms that the government decided had a "military appearance" and decided to restrict it based on that.
That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, but alas we have heard it here in the States too. Luckily it did not last.

AK-47s and MP5s in the prohibited class based on the guns evil appearance. I think it was mostly Liberal governments doing the restricting and prohibiting.
And yet it has done nothing to your crime rates. Amazing. One man’s evil is another man’s beauty.

[qutoe]Actually, given we are only allowed semi-automatic rifle magazines pinned to 5 rounds in Canada, I will be doing alot of reloading. But not speed reloading, and not under pressure.
Wow. Just wow.

Well brother. If you ever make it this far south let me know and I will pull out some stuff fer ya to shoot.

I just got married in January of this year to a wonderful woman. Imagine my surprise when she said she wanted a weapon and wanted to get a ccw. She doesn't really like semi-automatics and loves revolvers so we got her a nice S&W model 60 snubnosed .357 with a ported barrel. She shoots it well (3" groups at 10 yards), but was disappointed because her gun didn't shoot as accurately as my 6" S&W 686.

So guess what she wanted for her birthday. She wanted a .44 magnum with a long barrel so she can practice her accuracy while getting use to the recoil. Not being one to dissapoint my wife, I bought her a S&W .44 magnum light hunter. It is one of their performance center guns.

S&W .44 Magnum Light Hunter

Now she is very happily shooting tight groups while I get a kick out of telling the other guys at the range that it isn't my gun, that it is her gun, and that she asked for it.

I fired a friend's compact frame Taurus .357 about a month ago.
Honestly the recoil was so bad, I switched to .38 rounds.

I'm not a small person. I'm 6'1" , over 200 lbs.....
I can't imagine a woman using a .44 magnum who isn't built like an Amazon.

More to the point...I just don't see the .357 chambered revolver as a good choice for conceal carry.

No offense of course.

None taken.

Check your stance. Even as a big guy, I have to take an aggressive stance with that weapon (one of my carry guns is the Taurus 617 in .357 mag). More powerful cartridges require a more aggressive stance. Do you fire weaver or isosceles?

I find that isosceles is better for controlling recoil and for follow on shots.

Also remember that while the muzzle velocity will be lower out of a shorter barrel, the felt recoil will be greater because the firearm has less mass. This is one reason I do not advise hotter loads in revolvers not made of steel.

If I had enough meat I would send ya some.

My wife shot all sorts of caliburs before deciding on the .357. She practices mostly with .38, but every time we go out she shoots 20-40 shots of .357. She is quick to get back on target after the shot and is a very good shot. Part of that I attribute to the fact that she doesn't flinch at ALL in anticipation of the shot. That still gets to me because I still find myself anticipating the shot sometimes.

Another mitigating factor is that the gun is ported. This helps reduce felt recoil and keep the gun on target. She has no problem shooting about a round a second double action and keeping the shots on target.

As for the .44, she hadn't shot one before we got her hers, so that was kind of a surprise for her. In fact, she was the first to shoot it and she wanted it loaded with .44 magnums instead of specials. Unfortunately I forgot to warn her about muzzle flash with a .44. She put the shot just below the bullseye, but calmly put the gun down, turned around with WIDE open eyes and said "Is it SUPPOSE to do that? You shoot it and let me see!"

Now she enjoys the attention she gets when she shoots it and she is a very good shot with it. She is still new to shooting, so I suspect she will continue to improve.

All I know is I wouldn't want to be downrange of her with her pissed off at me!
