What Obama said about small town America sure seemed to be worded unortunately, but don't you think it's being blown out of proportion? People are saying that they feel threatened and that their Second Amendment right to bear arms is being threatened by Obama. Clinton is now saying that American's should have the right to bear arms, but in reality, was a strong fighter for tougher gun control. Obama said he thinks people who lost their jobs turn to guns. Makes sense. But whose Second Amendment right is he threatening? He didn't mention anything about revoking the right!

Barack Obama's Gun-Related Votes The U.S. Senate Debated: Obama Voted: Supporting concealed carry for citizens10 Anti-gun Banning many common semi-automatic firearms11 Anti-gun Disallowing self-defense in towns where guns are banned12 Anti-gun Imposing one handgun a month restrictions13 Anti-gun Requiring lock up your safety trigger locks14 Anti-gun Protecting gun dealers from frivolous lawsuits15 Anti-gun Outlawing gun confiscations during a national emergency16 Pro-gun Squelching the free speech rights of gun owners17 Anti-gun Restricting the interstate sales of firearms18 Anti-gun Repealing the gun ban in Washington, DC19 Anti-gun http://www.gunowners.org/pres08/obama.htm Obama regularly supported gun-control measures, including a ban on semiautomatic "assault weapons" and a limit on handgun purchases to one a month. He also opposed letting people use a self-defense argument if charged with violating local handgun bans by using weapons in their homes. The bill was a reaction to a Chicago-area man who, after shooting an intruder, was charged with a handgun violation. Supporters framed the issue as a fundamental question of whether homeowners have the right to protect themselves. Obama joined several Chicago Democrats who argued the measure could open loopholes letting gun owners use their weapons on the street. They said local governments should have the final say, but the self-defense exception passed 41-16 and ultimately became state law. "It's bad politics to be on the wrong side of the Second Amendment come election time," said Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association. "It will certainly be talked about. You can take that to the bank." http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/...n2369157.shtml |

I actually don't mind a one gun a month type arrangement. The fact that gun dealers continue to sell 20 and 30 handguns a month to people who are obvious criminals and smugglers is the reason that such a law is in place. Most gun dealers have something click in their mind when someone makes a huge handgun purchase, but some are just like profits are profits, who cares if they all end up on the black market to kill people later in the year.

I think he was just speaking symbolically. Small-town and rural people are culturally different from urban people. When they lose their jobs they are reluctant to move to an urban centre where they would easily be able to find another one. Why, because they like their culture of hunting, fishing, camping, etc... They don't want to give this up and be assimilated into urban culture, so they choose to stay in rural areas and stay unemployed.
