Several Philippine cities have been hit by bomb blasts in the past week. Bombs exploded in Jolo, Iligan City, Kauswagan, Cotabato City and Datu Piang. In Metro Manila a plot to bomb the office of the Ombudsman, Department of Agriculture and in Katipunan, Quezon City was discovered by authorities. More than 60 bomb attacks have been reported this year in the country.

MANILA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has decided to suspend its food aid operation in the war-affected southern Philippines after a series of bombing attacks there that killed 12 civilians and injured about 100 others over the past days.

Alghassim Wurie, WFP deputy country director to the Philippines, said the decision to halt food distribution for a week – starting from Wednesday -- in Mindanao was made out of concern for the safety of its workers following the spate of bombing attacks since Sunday.

On Tuesday morning, two separate bombings rocked the restive southern and killed six civilians, pushing the death toll to 12 in bombings there in only three days.

Around 7:50 a.m. local time (2350 GMT Monday), an improvised bomb -- attached to a motorcycle -- went off in front of a store, about 100 meters from a Mt. Carmel church in Jolo, Sulu province, killing six civilians and wounded about 40 others, including three policemen responding to the information from civilians who noticed protruding electrical wires on the parked motorcycle.

We have had some pretty impressive disasters here ourselves and we would NEVER shoot at each other. IF you caught someone looting you would take him out the back and kick his arse so hard his bum would wrap around his head.

Disasters are a time to work together not to shoot at each other.
For starters, it isn't our obligation to make sure the entire world approves of every action of each American. I respectfully suggest you mind your own business.

Next, looting was rampant. And not just "Oh, some kid just stole my TV", it's more like "Several heavily armed men just shot my husband and THEN took the TV".

I would be shooting, too, if I couldn't identify the person and I knew that my neighbors had been getting shot at.

Oh, and the criminals that were looting and killing and raping were using guns that weren't purchased legally. So confiscating all of the law abiding civilians' weapons, then leaving them high and dry (no pun intended) had horrible results. The cops obviously couldn't be everywhere at once, and whenever a criminal wielding a knife or gun showed up at your house, 911 was useless as every cop in the city already had his or her hands tied up, and then some.

Having personally gone through the aftermath of Hurricane Ike here in Houston, I can certainly attest that I was glad to have my shotgun with me. When you spend two weeks trapped in a major urban center with no electricity, surrounded by people with no food and no drinkable water, and no jobs to go to to keep them occupied, you get a real sense of just how quickly the world can go to hell. It was a surreal experience. Thankfully, we didn’t see anything approaching the level of looting and chaos that happened in New Orleans, but we could have. And two houses on my street did get completely gutted by looters, and some nearby stores got raided as well. It was a tense situation, and many people in Houston and the surrounding counties were for the most part on their own as far as protecting themselves and their property. Again, thankfully (inexplicably even) order was largely maintained in Houston after the storm, but that’s not to say it couldn’t have gone much worse, or that I’m counting on it going as smoothly next time.

Well, about 2 months ago, my handgun saved my wife's life. I would hardly call that "useless".

She is in El Paso, and at around 4am heard the car alarm go off. She grabbed a robe, and slipped our .380 pistol in the pocket before heading outside. She got to the front gate, and saw 2 punks had broken the window of her car, and were trying to steal it.

She asked them what in the heck they were doing, and one of them picked up a metal pipe and started to head towards her. He was about 6' away when she pulled out the pistol and pointed it at him.

She asked "Do you want some of this?" The gut dropped the pipe, and he and his buddy promptly took off. The cops showed up, and the first thing they told her was that she should have shot him.

I have no doubt that if she did not have the gun, my wife would probably be dead now. She is 46, and recently went through her second cancer surgery. There is nothing she could have done against 2 guys in their 20's if they decided to attack her, especially with metal pipes.

Glad your wife was safe! Hope she is better with the cancer as well!

On a large scale, peacful protests are more attractive. However, when it comes to local concerns, armed action is preferable. If a violent group (not necessarily the government) is taking over a small town, one hundred people joining hands and singing won't do much against thirty people with firearms.

Besides, I think even people in peacful protests should be armed, so they can at least escape if their plans fail. A peacful protest is only a peacful one until you are being shot at (see:Iran). You would have all these people die, I would have them defend themselves until they can escape. In before: 'we can't trust them', don't be so elitist as to assume collective irresponsibility.

Mate I cannot even CONCEIVE of that happening today = 100 armed people holding a town to hostage - where is your Federal Government while this is going on?

So, you think this would not have happened under Marcos?
