Thread: CDC: Ads spark huge increase to quit smoking line

Not sure if this is the correct section, but here it is anyway.

I have seen these very graphic commercials, and personally I considered them to be catching and telling. So I googled the news to see what is happening with them.

It would appear that they are having a bit of an affect. Personally, I found the one where the husband says he never thought 23 would be middle aged in regards to his wife's death to be the most thought provoking.

Anyone else seen these and thought the same? Perhaps one day folks will simply quit what will almost certainly lead to later life health complications. As a former smoker, I do realize how incredibly hard it is, but after years of not smoking, I must say quitting smoking was one of the smartest things I have done.

ATLANTA – Health officials say a graphic new anti-smoking campaign led to a doubling of calls to a toll-free number that helps people quit cigarettes.

Calls to 1-800-QUIT-NOW totaled more than 33,000 last week — the first week of the ad campaign. The phone line received less than 14,500 calls the week before.

Meanwhile, clicks to the www.smokefree.gov website, another government smoking cessation service, rose from about 20,000 to about 66,000. Those were the largest jumps in traffic the 7-year-old phone line and Web site had seen.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the numbers Friday. The CDC's $54 million, 12-week campaign is the agency's first national anti-smoking advertising effort, and features hard-hitting images of people who developed cancer and other illnesses from smoking.

I just saw a commercial about people having to get amputations from smoking.

It didn't really go into detail, just kind of showed people with problems, and hinted they were caused by smoking.

It honestly didn't even look believable, more like those outrageous disconnected anti-drug commercials that just don't quite hit the mark.

I'm not saying people don't lose limbs in some way from smoking, but honestly this is the first time I've ever heard of it in any way, so it can't be that frequent.
