Thread: Our lives are cut short by what we eat

Exactly what foods should we have been consuming all along which would make this miracle come to pass? If this logic were, in fact, true, then indigenous tribes which, until interference from the western world, would have been living on this natural diet you seem to think is the fountain of longevity, would have had a populous which had a good portion of several hundred old citizens, yes?

And let's be honest here folks..would you really WANT to live 800 years? Not to mention the serious population problems the world would be having.

Has anyone considered that fear and condemnation for everything we do is bad for our health? Science can do better than this. More water definitely with less chlorine sounds like a good idea. Dolly Parton once said she ate whatever she wanted just not very much of it. This makes sense to me.
I hope we calm down with our paranoia. It seems that the scientist who make it to the morning shows are just not really the good ones. Everything is wrong, unhealthy or terrible. Like the ol codgers say.

Yes, you are correct. and you answered your own question at the same time.

And let's be honest here folks..would you really WANT to live 800 years? Not to mention the serious population problems the world would be having.
Be honest, you think 70-80 is what people really want? if that's the case funerals should be treated like frat parties. but no, somebody is crying too hard to see their loved ones leave SO SOON.

Personally, I wouldn't mind living until 300-350 as long as I'm as fit, mobile and clear thinking as I am now. why not?

If I could ALL the things I do now, running, hiking, swimming, fixing on my cars, weights, etc...be all I can be, are you kidding me? 300 is a cool number.

Problem is, this world has taught us that long life is NOT cool. it's boring.

And nature will take care of the population with floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc...as it has always done.

Iron Supplements Reduce Cognitive and Behavioral Problems in Small Babies
December 13, 2012 - Underweight babies born deficient in iron are at risk of developing cognitive and behavioral problems, according to experts. Now, researchers have discovered that supplementing those babies' diets with iron prevents developmental problems in more than one-third of the children.
Magnus Domellof, head of pediatrics at Umea University in Sweden, says low birth-weight babies, weighing from 2,000 to 2,500 grams, look normal, but about 30 percent are iron-deficient at six months, and 10 percent develop a condition called iron-deficient anemia. As these children get older, Domellof says iron deficiency can lead to behavioral problems, including attention problems, anxiety and depression, compared to babies treated with iron supplements. Domellof’s team studied a group of 285 newborns, and gave the borderline low-weight babies iron drops daily for six months. Another group of 90 infants in a placebo group in the study received drops of sugar water that contained no iron.

When researchers followed up with the children three years later, they found only 3 percent of the subjects in the treated group displayed behavioral and cognitive problems, compared to 13 percent among those in the untreated placebo group. Iron deficiency did not appear to affect the children’s IQ scores. Although it was a small study, Domellof says his research is the first to show a direct link between iron deficiency and development-related attention and emotional problems in low birth-weight babies. Domellof says these babies are typically ignored because they look relatively normal at birth. “They are about 5 percent of all infants in the U.S. They are quite often neglected in studies, even though the few studies that have been performed actually show that these are at increased risk for behavioral problems, school problems, like that,” Domellof said.

Domellof notes that even if a breast-feeding mother is taking iron supplements, that iron does not transfer to her child through her breast milk. Iron-deficient children must take iron supplements directly with their food. Domellof says he intends to revisit the children in his study in a few years to look at their IQ scores. “Actually what we are doing is following up these children at seven years of age to see if we can find any subtle differences in intelligence,” Domellof said.

According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency -- a leading cause of anemia -- is the most common micronutrient disorder in both developing and developed countries. An estimated two billion people suffer from anemia, and 40 percent of preschool-children are believed to be anemic, while low iron reserves contribute to one-fifth of maternal deaths. The article on the role iron supplements can play in preventing development problems in small babies is published in the journal Pediatrics.

I read a long time back that all mammals live 12 times the age of their puberty except us. So apparently we should be able to live 130 + easily is what the article was saying.

recently I read how the liver regrows every 2 months, skin every 6 months, nails, hair and fuel for brain cells. It really makes sense that you are what you eat.

    Study: Mushrooms Can Help Dieters
April 22, 2013 - The humble mushroom can pack a powerful nutritional punch, according to two new studies released Monday. The edible fungus can help dieters reduce their intake of red meat and still feel full, and can provide as much vitamin D as a nutritional supplement.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health gave one group of obese adults about one-quarter of a liter of white button mushrooms per day in place of meat. A second group was placed on a standard weight reduction diet.

At the end of a year-long trial, the mushroom group lost more pounds and maintained their weight loss better than the control group. The findings show the benefit of substituting low-energy-density foods, like mushrooms, for high-energy-density foods, like lean ground beef, for reducing energy and fat intake.

In a separate study, at Boston University School of Medicine, researchers randomly gave a small group of healthy adults supplements of either vitamin D2, vitamin D3 or mushroom powder containing vitamin D2 for 12 weeks during the winter. The vitamin, which is crucial for bone health, muscle strength and immune system function, is produced naturally in our skin when exposed to the sun.

At the end of the trial, there was no difference in levels of vitamin D among the three groups. The investigators say their results show that mushrooms are a good natural food source for this important nutrient. Both studies received funding from The Mushroom Council, a group of U.S. mushroom producers and importers.

Okay you all are likely right but if your low income especially very low income you eat what you can afford. Ever price high quality meat like fish or the cost of fresh fruit or even basic cereal if you want milk on it over say a staple food a box of mac & cheese or going to an all-u-can-eat pizza buffet to chuck in all the calories I can for under $6 (one meal for the day).

Maybe instead of food stamps having government price caps on staple foods subsidized by the government would be better and allow more people to buy good food, get good quality fish to $3 a pound I would buy it and make it at home.
