Default Lloyd Bentsen D-Texas Dies at Age 85

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060524/...o/obit_bentsen

My prayers go out to the Bensten family. Although I was no fan of Bensten, he was a legend. His famous line ("Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.") to Dan Quayle is a huge part of the modern political lexicon.

Of course I personally prefer Reagan's similar comment to Clinton..

"This fellow they've nominated claims he's the new Thomas Jefferson. Well, let me tell you something. I knew Thomas Jefferson. He was a friend of mine. And governor, you're no Thomas Jefferson."

May he rest in peace.

Default good post

Bentsen was one of the last old school moderate Democrats. He supported fiscal responsibility, a strong defense, but also understood the need for supporting the poor and the weak. I wish we had more like him (of either party) in Congress today.

I'm worried for your party if you're a Democrat. I have good friends that are Democrats and we understand and respect each other. We also worry over the future of their party. They feel pretty much alienated since the party is becoming unrecognizable to them. If he's the last of the moderates, then that means there are indeed no conservative Democrats and the party is hopelessly leftist. If you ask me, that's a recipe for disaster.

Of course, I'm a registered Republican, so that might color my view just a smidge.

I do agree that we need more like him, and in both parties I might add.

Default a statesman of character and integrity

and a member of a dying breed. It's sad to see these men of honor being lost.

Default I can disagree with his politics

and still respect a person like him. It is a shame there aren't more like him. Rest in peace.

That is a very good assessment of the 'politicians' of Bentsen's era. I also had respect for Hubert Humphrey even if he was a liberal because he was a liberal with honor.

PS about the only people on THIS BOARD who will most likely though crap on the memory of Bentsen are JP5 and DUH2. Well maybe just JP will shew hates all Dems ...... equally !!!!!
