Default Seven Cuban soccer players defect after national team plays in Florida

Seven members of Cuba's under-23 soccer team defected this week after a game against the United States in Florida, The Miami Herald reports.

"We were sitting down to eat and we slipped out a side entrance of the hotel and ran for it," Yenier Bermudez, the team captain, tells the St. Petersburg Times.

The players say they want asylum -- and a chance to play for a Major League Soccer team.

One pro franchise, Miami FC, tells Reuters that it will give the players a shot.

"The loss of seven players cast into doubt whether the Cuban squad will be able to field a team for Thursday's 5:30 p.m. match against Honduras and continue in the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympics," the Herald says. "Eleven players remain on the Cuban roster, and one -- forward Roberto Linares -- is ineligible to play against Honduras because he is suspended with a red card from the USA match."

Fidel no longer runs the country. Where have you been? Also what does it have to do with Hugo? Don't you think if the US dropped the economic embargo and the Helms-Burton Act which limits travel restrictions that these players would have never left their families?

Nope. Some people like to live in Freedom not Communism.

Glad they got away... sorry the rest didn't get the same chance.

Look at the link. It says the players want a chance to play for a Major League Soccer team. That sounds like it's economic reasons. I find it odd that you can even consider the US as a country of freedom when it's the only country in the world that restricts it's citizens from traveling to Cuba.

I tend to find the first part more important then the second. I don't doubt you find the second more notable then the first for convenient reasons.

I mean who would want to live in Freedom instead of Communism right?
..except you of course.

I see you just glossed over that part where I showed the US has some basic freedoms nonexistent. Keep up the propaganda cartoons. How can anyone argue against them.

Probably because its irrelevant, incomparable, and meant to distract.
