''Female genital mutilation (FGM) - or female circumcision - is a dreadful, iniquitous, illegal business - and it is happening here, (UK)" says Rendell, 78. "As soon as I heard of it, I thought, this must be stopped, but I didn't realise then quite how difficult that would be."


"The 'circumcision' is done mostly by elderly women who have no medical qualifications," says Rendell, who sits in the House of Lords as Baroness Rendell of Babergh. "They perform this operation on girls aged around seven or eight, without anaesthetic, getting other women to hold them down. A knife is used, or a sharp stone; the business is awful."



FGM is no longer a practice carried out in undeveloped countries on the other side of the world; there's every chance it's happening in your country, if not your very neighbourhood.

British novelist, Ruth Rendell, uses this subject as the basis of her new novel and hopefully her addressing this issue will go some way to introducing the topic into mainstream discussion. I'm sure someone will be offended by this, but I feel female genital mutilation is (*)(*)(*)(*)ed-up, disgusting and backward. I can have respect for the cultures of others up to a certain point. But I can't really feel respectful of a culture that still practices something that appears so heinously barbaric to me.

I'm a carry-me-out-in-a-coffin capitalist, old chum. I run my own business and I do very well at it. I put up with the 'oh, aren't you lucky' and 'it's alright for you' comments because I know some people wouldn't even begin to understand if I told them about the 14 hr days I put in. Male circumcision is an entirely different proposition to FGM - educate yourself and you will understand why. And you might also cotton-on to why your goofy video clip was so out of line.
