There are a lot of restaurants, a person does not have to work at one that allows smoking. Even if they do have to, they can work in an area that isn't effected by the second hand smoke, such as the kitchen.

It doesnt matter if all wait staff, host staff etc are all non-smokers, many are and even those who arent deserve a healthy work environment.

Its also not right to just say well "dont work there" or go work in the kitchen. Telling people to just work in conditions that are sub-standard to accomodate smokers seems out of whack to me.

I agree with people being allowed their unhealthy habits, they just shouldnt be allowed to run people out of their jobs or impact those other peoples health due to them.

Its not so much to ask that you restrict your personal habits to your personal space such as your own home, your own car or even just outside (which is public but isnt a closed space and thereby has no real impact on non smokers).

Smokers are not running people out of jobs. Smoking sections and smoking environments existed before the people came to get the jobs. They could choose to either work there or somewhere else, or depending on their circumstances, they could create a new business. Over the past 25 years, it is more the case that smokers are the ones being run out of society.

It doesnt matter to me if the employee is a smoker or a non-smoker. All employees deserve a decent health environment and shouldnt have to work in one that is substandard to accomodate smokers. Its a personal habit and your vices have to stay to yourself and working in a closed space for 6 to 8 hours every week with many smokers is certainly creating a substandard working condition.

Telling people to go find a different job is very unrealistic as well....maybe we can just make all working conditions substandard and unsafe and just simply say if they dont like it, they could work elsewhere?

Smokers arent being run out of society, no one has suggested moving smokers anywhere....they simply cant engage in the activity of smoking in shared public spaces with the exception of outdoors since this is a shared space that others are NOT affected by the activity.

I think you are wrong on all counts. There are plenty of employment opportunities, and any employment represents a choice. Nobody is forced to work for a specific industry, or a specific company within that industry, or a specific location of that company, or in a specific capacity for that company.

Smokers have been suffering ever more restrictive regulations to control their habit and to make them physically pay more for it. Your position would impose more restrictions.

Well obviously I dont agree and I dont think there are "plenty" of jobs, especially for people without a specific education or training. People are forced to work for what they can find and its really not right that they have to work in unhealthy conditions to accomodate a personal habit people should limit to their own personal spaces and outdoors.

Smokers dont "suffer" because they dont get to make other people breath in their smoke...they suffer because they have an addiction that inteferes with their life and needs to be satisfied so often it makes being out "in the world" difficult for them.

Its their own personal habit, they can restrict it to their own personal spaces and outdoors, its not that hard. They also dont have to go out to eat right? Endangering the health of other people just isnt acceptable, endangering their own IS...hence the restrictions. They are simply restricted to keeping the habit personal and not sharing it.

What on earth makes you think that all places in the world to eat out would be smoke-filled if we simply allowed business owners to choose whether or not to allow smoking in their establishments?

Aren't there some people in existence who place value on a smoke-free environment (I would think there are some, judging by this thread)? Wouldn't there be plenty of reasons for the owner of a restaurant to ban smoking on his premises? I think it would appeal to plenty of customers, a lot more than appealing to smokers would bring in. Right there, that is an incentive.

I really just don't understand left-think.

Well, the tobacco industry isn't going broke.
Smokers pay taxes everytime they buy a pack of cigarettes.
Now in some states without cigarette taxes that big pot hole in front of that restuarant might not get fixed, and if the snow should come the road to that restuarant might not get salted so cars could get to it.

So if restuarant ownrs want to pay a higher property tax to cover this , fine he should not even allow smokers in is restuarant after all smokers could have an aroma of smoke on their clothes, but when propety taxs go up don't be complaining.

Left-think; the more taxes paid by smokers the less taxes non smokers have to pay, the less taxes from smokers well who's left to cover the taxes???

I definitely would have been in jail had I been around back in those days. I am partial to a good glass of SoCo.
