True Story
This tickled me so I thought I`d share it.
Reprinted in Private Eye from the Battle Creek Enquirer, 29/12/05
" This is what can happen when people don`t think things through," Lt. James McDonagh of the Calhoun County Sheriff`s Department told a press conference in Michigan.
"The driver got lost this morning in the Leroy Township area, and when he backed into a field to turn around near J Drive South, his Mercury sedan became stuck in the mud. After several futile attempts to free his car, with his rear wheels just spinning around, he suddenly thought of a way to get the vehicle out of the mud. But in retrospect, he can see now that it wasn`t a very bright idea.
"He placed his toolbox on the accelerator to rev the engine, then got behind the car, and tried to push it free. He was successful in freeing the vehicle, but hadn`t thought about how he would regain control of it. Once it was out of the mud, the Mercury sedan accelerated across a cut soybean field, killing a cow in the process, while the man ran helplessly behind.
"It travelled half a mile, reaching an estimated speed of 100mph and sometimes becoming airborne, before crashing into a tree. The impact crushed the car back to the windshield, which is how we could estimate the speed. No tickets were issued, and we won`t be releasing the driver`s name. He`s suffered enough already."
Sounds to me like this chap`s got the potential for a Darwin Award one day
